Are we not putting in a $400,000,000 stadium upgrade,
which implies a major commitment to football, but suffer
    from poor NIL Money?

    This seems inconsistent.

    What gives? o_O

NIL is a tax on the fans to pay for rosters while the university makes all the money. Fans/boosters pay millions for rosters, university hires mediocre coaches to use those rosters, university makes obscene profit.

Stadium upgrades can be funded with all of the UAA’s income from tv, ticket sales, branding, etc, plus donations.

NIL is funded strictly by the fans/boosters/sponsors. If you want more to be spent, spend more.

As an analogy, the Governor of Florida can't find enough money for teachers, but he can find a million dollars for fsu's potential lawsuit against the CFP. It's called, "Prioritizing."

Donations to university are tax deductible

    Donations to NIL are not.

How are they going to justify asking for the donations for upgrades if they aren't going to do something to make the team better?

This may be suited for its own thread, but it could also be a stupid inquiry.
Do players sign NIL deals with the university merchandiser? When a jersey with a players name is sold, does he get a piece of that? And separately, why don’t these NIL deals have clauses to discourage the transfer portal, and opting out of bowl games?

Because they aren't donations. Fans who give money for NIL are paying someone to play. They aren't getting NIL benefits either. Similarly the money I paid the electrician to install my new electric panel is not tax deductible.

Different pots of $. Stadium upgrades are UF athletic assoc costs. The UAA does not grant NIL money (someone please correct me if wrong), which is from external entities. So what is the incentive for an external entity to hand a kid a check? My best guess is that it's almost exclusively about advertising and merchandise.

UF players (and others in small market cities) might be at a disadvantage for NIL. The merch and ad markets are national, but also local/regional. Consider the local market for players at USC or TX (Austin) compared with those in the Gainesville area.

I guess schools like Michigan, Clemson, FSU, etc. might have similar challenges. I also guess, though, that NIL ops in Gainesville might necessarily rely more on national markets, limiting overall capital.

These are all excellent questions and representative of the fact that we as fans know very little about the ins & outs of NIL. Why would we, unless we were in the business or closely connected to players/teams?

They’re not legally allowed to tie them to any school or actually playing. That’s state law, not ncaa rules.

They do sign merchandising deals and they are compensated for any products that use their name, image, or likeness.

What about this is unclear? The universities hire coaches, pay scholarships, and build facilities. They do not “officially” participate in NIL, but just like the $100 handshake of old, somehow boosters know who the coaches want to sign and boosters pay those players for their name, image and likeness. Only the magnitude and utter clarity has changed on the pay front.

The big change is the portal and unimpeded free agency chaos (along with unfettered tampering). All courtesy of an NCAA that refused to give athletes a seat at the table while feeding on billions of dollars behind the veil of amateurism.

As for UF - we have good facilities now. We do seem competitive financially on NIL (certainly have more $ than FSU). Is it coaching piled on years of instability….
