After listening to Shane's podcast today, it sounds like we don't have enough NIL money to compete...we can't just go out and get whoever we want. They didn't even think we have a shot at the FSU rush end in the portal to be able to pay him enough. Sadly, we did not position ourselves correctly prior to this chaos to take advantage of the new system and now we are scrambling to try to keep our head above water.
Yep, many other decent schools are suffering their own selfish players too. I don't blame the NIL, although I long for the time before it, I just think we need to make it less easy to just switch up schools... We need to fix the transfer rules.
I think an NCAA rule mandating a one year sit out after transfer would be valid. The courts have never said otherwise, to my knowledge. NIL didn't do away with every other NCAA rule on the books.
Kid is chasing a ring now. He was at the SECCG last weekend. I look for him to go to Bama, Texas or UGa
As it is rn I feel like I want to be done with college football for a bit. Between the portal (especially the portal) and NIL it’s chaos and whoever has the money can buy whoever they want. There’s no loyalty, only looking for a payday. That’s what I used to love about college football. The love of school and the rivalries and building yourself as a player, competitor and a man over 3-4 years meant something. That was the recipe for making it to the next level and getting paid. Now we’re paying high schoolers that haven’t proven anything yet. How does that build character. That is the millennial/gen z mentality so prevalent in all of society today. Nothing matters anymore and I don’t see the school I love being able to swim with the sharks.
Unless I misread that, yes, he would consider returning depending on who the defensive new hires are. His position coach is Mike Peterson though, who’s still here. Interesting.
Life experiences have taught me when people say it’s not about the money…. It’s usually about the money
Honestly, at this point if these guys want to follow a coach somewhere else, or they just don’t care about their team or they want money … I don’t care. If I’m not busy on Saturdays maybe I’ll watch a game but they’ve ruined the game for me. This guy is a starter. If he doesn’t care neither do I.
Listen, they all sacrifice. Some more than others. But when you are getting paid to go to college, paid to play at a top university, get treated like a king, get the best food, housing, facilities and everything else, as an alum, I'm allowed an occasional rant. For years I gave to the University. And I don't know them, and for the most part I give them the benefit of the doubt. I actually have more /equal respect for the kids we never hear of. The scout team guys that earn a scholly. And, I'll be the first to admit, the 'system' has failed the kids, more than the kids are failing us, the school and Gator Nation. As a footnote: You can interchange Universities here. It's a chronic disease IMHO. Not Gator centric issue. It's a Gator issue for me, maybe some others, but the rant is for college ball in general. Unfortunately, I don't have the answers. If I did I'd be head of the SEC. Seeing it's the off-season for us- I piss and moan and offer criticism. I offer up a lot of praise and if one ever needed proof you could read through my seasons posts. (painful in itself) I love the kids and I love the coaches. And with the $ everyone is getting paid they deserve to be criticized for the product they put on the field. That doesn't mean I'm not grateful. They are not mutually exclusive. Recruit. Train. Hit the portal. Develop. Land coaches. Win. Seems simple... I liked the amateur model better myself. Go Gators.
Not disagreeing with what you posted, Rick, but see Bobby's post (below) which helps to clarify what I said in my post.....we have some other stuff to work on first......before worrying about this transfer stuff.
Valid point. He is chasing money, I don't care what he says. Sorry, not sorry. In an attempt to stay on the positive side of these events concerning our defense, I am quite confident that our defense next year can't possibly be worse than the 2023 defense was.
I think if has to do with you gave the opportunity to transfer free now you are taking it back. For no other reason than you dislike the outcome.
I think more kids are going to work themselves out of a job in college football with the portal than those that upgrade. Somethings gotta give.
