16 is the number that includes all the teams that have any possible chance of winning in a reasonable amount of time (4 weeks).

This has been researched several times and 16 excludes any reasonable chance that you do not have the best team in the mix when you start the playoff (less than 5%) and takes 4 weeks to complete.

NFL is different in that the 12th best team often beats the top four teams.9-12 has almost no chance of beating any of the top four teams in college. The 64th team in ncaa I guess theoretically has a chance but not really. FSU lost their chance when Travis went down. They made the right choice except fsu should have fallen further as evident by being a 14 point dog to Georgia. They always claimed that the criteria is the four best teams. This is closer to tgat but if best is true, Vegas says Georgia should still be in. I think the drama has helped college football. If they let fsu in, it wouldn’t be near the interest and they would have gotten smashed and forgotten. Now, there’s always the chance that Georgia has no interest and fsu get to do the ucf dance.

12 is enough in that 12 may never win a title but I like 16 better as well because 1-4 don’t deserve any more advantage than they already have when they bought all the talent. 13-16 may never win a game but at least 1-4 don’t get a buy.

I can't wait to watch all those #5 vs. #12 blowouts at #5's campus stadium.

Those may have an upset here or there. If they went to 16, those blowouts would be much worse. I like 16 anyway. Same number of weeks and no buys. No possibility of the next teams winning a game. 1 vs 16 is a big mismatch but not as bad as a regular season schedule that has several farce games each year.
If fsu was in a 16 team playoff this year, there’s a good chance they could lose no matter where you seeded them. There would be an interesting story once in a while.

This is a fair question. Of course I like the NCAA bball tournament, so does that completely nullify my argument for football? I would say games in the basketball regular season feel almost meaningless. When Duke and UNC play each other on the hardwood, I basically don’t care who wins, because no single regular season game really changes anything. I am interested when Texas and OU meet on the gridiron. Look at what happened to Georgia and OSU this week. Those were make or break games. Almost every game in NCAA football is make or break.

I am sure I’ll like the new postseason tournament, but regular season football games will now be less important. Until now, all games seemed like they were post-season games, so I will be a little sad to trade a weekly “in or out” for “higher or lower seeded”.
