I know some people have given up on Billy, want him gone, and see this as proof. "Rats are fleeing the sinking ship!" Ohio State's QB, who started all of their games this year, is entering the portal. They were one possession away from undefeated season and playoff. Not McClellan-level...the starting QB. Is OSU a sinking ship? Of course not. Don't over-grade Billy on portal activity.
Speaking for self, I’m absolutely willing to give him this season to achieve the bare-minimum standard of a winning season. Just don’t sit here a year from now, squawking the same nonsense about giving him more time if he can’t achieve minimum expectations by his third year.
It is the moving season. Players going and coming coaches going and coming it is the nfl model get used to it.
Add to this that Sean Spencer already got a job - Texas A&M under Mike Elko - well respected defensive coach…AND we’ve already lost a couple DL recruits …. something is no bueno in the program right now
Sadly we seem to have more quality leaving than coming. Initially I was told that was because Nap had to clean all the trash out, didn’t realize some of the “trash” was guys he brought in….
I guess Hugh Freeze is the exception. He's quietly building a Top 3 class as he hasn't lost any key players and just flipped the best WR from A&M. Add to that what he already did last year and what he has done over the past few months and he's building an offensive juggernaut. Good thing we don't play them. 3 of the top receivers each 6' 4" tall with size and speed and very high football IQs. All he needs to do is grab a quality QB from the portal and he has his own version of LSU's offense under Burrows.
Speaking for yourself though you may be, I believe that's an accurate assessment/reflective of Gator Nation as a whole. He gets next season almost without reservation (ie--only if on field product is undeniably ugly, would he get mid-season boot). But the margin of error has been exhausted. Spent. No excuses. The noise will be defening if it appears we're on trajectory to another 5-6 win season with inept game management, uber stupid play calling, and embarrassing mistakes that betray a lack of discipline. It's rally time Billy. In terms coach ought well understand: ain't no time left for scared money, coach. He needs to lay it on the line, fight like he'll, and show us something.
Th is is a big point. Portal is free agency, call it what it is. Winning, money , and nil contracts are the biggest factors. The only thing coaches control is winning and winning is control by coaching, money, and nil contracts. The only part the coach completely controls is coaching and partially recruiting. Coaches have no control over their boosters banks accounts or how the school requires them to play the recruiting game. This type of free agency is way worse than anything the nfl does. I don’t even watch the nfl anymore but this is worse. At least the nfl has caps to make teams spend equally and compensation in draft picks if one team tampers with another’s roster. An out going coach can just take his players with him. One team develops a player and when he’s ready to play, the bigger pocket teams can simply raid your team by paying your player more than you can afford. The top teams can break away and put their employees under contracts or continue putting the payroll part of the game on the fans and continue with highest bidder wins.
Mostly agree, but at the end of the day, we *are* the University of Florida. We *will* be able to stack our roster with able bodied capable young men, who will be able to compete in the SEC. Coach needs to figure out how to dig DEEP into each of his players, get the best out of them, get them in top physical shape, exercise discipline, make sure they're positioned properly, get to where they need to be, for what they need to do.... to do what needs to be done, each and every play.... ....coach to identify and exploit opponents' weaknesses and overcome our own... IOW--what one ought to reasonably expect from a professional getting paid >7 million per annum, with plenty of resources and staff provided at his disposal. Sorry coach, but I really don't think the deadpan Andy Griffith routine is going to cut it. You have to dig deeper in yourself coach.... in order to dig deeper in your players... and you must begin doing so now.
That’s not going to work. He has to have help through the portal or no amount of coaching is going to get the job done. It starts with players.
Agreed. And I think a definition of “undeniably ugly” is important. The on-field product I’ve seen the past two years is “undeniably ugly.” The team has looked consistently unprepared and undisciplined. It’s not just a talent gap. If it looks like it has looked next year, then there is zero reason to believe it would be any different in any number of subsequent years.
It's worked at Stanford, Duke, Notre Dame, Utah, Minnesota, and a few other places, with lesser talent than we get at UF. It's just a helluva lot harder, than when you're able to coax pre-packaged game ready badass supedtuds to make it so easy, that dumasses like Kirby notso Smart and Dumbo Fishead can win nattys. Note: I'm not talking nattys here; but I am talking hard ass work, commitment, discipline, dedication, and really, REALLY, HARD. ASS. WORK. ....for which, from my vantage point....we've already paid for. Up front. Down payment. In full, with right to expect carry over of the surplus, well into next year. Let me put it to you this way: if we gave you the job, with carte blanche on the costs and support staff and facilities...and offered you say one million dollars per win on the back end, but only collectible if you won 7 games.... How hard would you bust your ass for your prize? Would you be all Andy opey dopy dope Griffith? Or might you be perhaps a wee more hungry?
