Every team with a pulse will get in from now on. FSU would get trashed and would only have that to cry about this year instead of pretending their championship got away.
I looked it up and you're right. I couldn't believe it because that was an 8-4 season but evidently we were #7 on selection Sunday. Still not "barely missing" but it's the closest we've ever come during this playoff era.
Agreed, but this ends up being true by definition. I am interested in identifying the best team, and it just seems exceedingly unlikely that the best team end up being ranked outside the top 10. Notice that this year, people are arguing about whether Georgia or FSU should have gotten in. No one is making a claim that Ole Miss or Missouri should be taking home the title.
That’s not true. There are 133 teams and only 12 teams make it. NCAABB lets 64 (68 counting the play-in games) and many good teams don’t make it in. It’s not about whether you have a high probability to win, but whether you have a chance. We see Cinderellas get to the final four. We see NFL wildcard teams win the Super Bowl. This keepaway from the playoffs game hurts the sport.
I think an 8 team playoff would capture all the teams that would have a legitimate chance of winning it all. 12 adds a safety factor on top of that. Teams 13-16 aren’t winning it all in this sport
Another time where the schedule makers screwed us. We picked up TAAM if I recall right and lost FSU, also the LSU game (shoe toss) got moved due to a covid outbreak, we went to the wire with Bama in the SECCG
I chuckle at the complaining about the playoff. Remember the days when you had to wait to get voted number 1? It has always been the case in college football that late season loses or the loss of a key player, could doom your chances at a NC. First the BCS then the playoff was a means to lessen the brutality of losing your shot and give deserving teams a shot. That's all. Let's not forget that Florida was the last team to win it's first NC and that was by the grace of some stones falling our way. OSU and ASU had to win to get us out shot. Not because we weren't the best but because we lost late to a great team FSU. In the history of college football, uga loses it's last game and it's out. FSU looks like hot garbage in 2 games after losing its QB and playing a mediocre schedule and it is out. The eye test has always been a big thing. You had to win big or convincingly. The eye test says FSU is not as good as the other 4. Now it may say uga is as good but you got that last game loss. If nothing else these results are consistent with the history of college football. How many times were deserving teams denied? Does anyone really think that 84 Gators wouldn't have wiped the field with byu? It is time for change but what a way to go out!
That would be a minor upset. It’s not on the level as something like TCU beating Michigan, and even that is relatively tame.
04 Auburn got snubbed only to watch a cheating USCw smoke Okla. It happens and nobody with one bit of football IQ thinks that FSU would stand a chance vs the top 7 teams the way their offense is now. Just reality.
I'm fine with top 4 getting a bye, NFL teams get first round bye, it's a reward for winning your division or having a top record. In the case this year UGA lost its conference, so they get to strap up a week early. Make sense to me.
This. Worse, some two loss team at #13 gets hot, a few controversial call go their way, and knocks off an unbeaten team to win it all. Oh, the controversy. If you limit the players to 8 teams, you will most likely have all one loss or no loss teams, so whoever wins out can justify being legit.
There is mo empirical way to distill it down to 2-4 teams in the current conference model and it will get worse going forward. The top 10-12 teams is pretty inclusive and you may get an upset in the early rounds that would make the lower seed worthy of participation but unlikely to win 2 additional games. There should be no issue with greater participation (teams). The best teams should be able to win out. The trick will be to see if the bye will help or hurt 1-4. Helps for injury recovery will it slow momentum? Coming opponent will still tbd so the extra week isn’t inherently prep advantageous for specific opponent
As a CBB fan, do you have the same reservations about its tournament? I don’t. Spectator sports are about entertainment value for most people. Personally, I’d love for Florida to win regardless if they’re the consensus “best” team. Barring that I want to see upsets. For CFB I’d like to see interesting matchups and FSU doesn’t qualify for me (ignoring my dislike of them).
Six teams was the right number. The first and last four team selections would have been perfect with six.
Marco Wilson is the sole reason we were 8-2 instead of 10-0 after LSU in 2020. Still picking up an NFL check and doubling down on his antics after shitting the bed on purpose like he did with that damn shoe toss. I refuse to blame anyone else. Repeatedly out of position and burned against aTm. Mullen should have kicked his ass off the team after the shoe toss, and Mullen should have been fired for naming him a captain for the SECCG.
