I hear you on the history, but we never got a chance to know. At least starting next year, we will get to see some "what if" scenarios unfold.
It was better than the writers picking the winner or the two team farce. Next year will be a 12 team farce to some. Always improving. Like 12 teams, as players might not sit out to prepare for the draft for at least these games
If that was how it was set up, then yes as would Bama and Washington. I bet uga would accept that this year if it meant they were in. Don't you?
You think Michigan deserves a bye week over GA? Well, okay. If GA were in the 12-team playoff, they'd be screaming bloody hell about other teams getting a bye. I promise you that will be an issue in the future. The complaints about FSU not getting in this year will pale in comparison to the complaints about the bye week + teams 13/14/15.
To me, it seems like 8 is the sweet spot. We have to remember that these are college kids, and dragging the season out for much longer might be problematic. If the committee picked the top eight, there might be some complaining by those left out, but I think it would be minimal. And for all the bitching about four, that is a hell of a lot better than two. Face it: no one outside of delusionole land thought they belonged in, because they didn't.
Not the point. If the top four teams get a bye, then they all deserve it over uga. They know that going into next season. Personally, I'm opposed to any byes at all. So, the playoffs have to be 8 or 16 to ensure that everyone plays the same amount of games.
2019 was our best year but I don't remember us being just barely left out. I want to say we were around #10 on selection Sunday, and then we beat UVA in the bowl game and finished #6. But that's pretty much it for the 4-team playoff era. Maybe we were close in the Covid year? Correct me if I'm wrong.
#10 would still be enough to get into a real playoff system. We made quite a few NY6 Bowls, though... so in theory we were pretty close several times.
Yes we did. I was just responding to what you said about us barely being left out of the 4 team playoff. I don't think we've ever been on the fringe when it was time for them to select the teams.
This is your comment that I responded to: Rightly or wrongly, if that's the way it's set up, then yes they would deserve a bye. You think uga would turn a bye down if the script were flipped? As I stated, I don't believe any team should get a bye, but since college football is trying to emulate the NFL, it shouldn't be surprising that byes are in the mix.
Actually, this was the first comment you responded to: So we've come full circle. My contention is that there should be no bye week . . . we appear to agree.
This is my response to your first post. Had nothing to do with how many teams are in the playoffs. It was about whether uga could win even though they weren't one of the top 4.
This. Byes would lead to a whole other round of bitching and moaning. Number five and six would be mortally offended and complain mercilessly. Play eight games straight up, and let the best team win.
