Don't get too far ahead of yourself. He may well pan out but I remember not all that long ago when UF landed "one of the best QB recruits in elite 11 history" who was the #1 QB. His name - Jeff Driskel. HS is not a perfect predictor of college performance.
Driskel has been consistently employed by the NFL since leaving college. It's not his fault he was forced to play for Muschamp after being recruited by Meyer.
I agree we was never going anywhere but if He used his grad transfer to come here but does doing that take away his regular one time freebie? If it does, why wouldn’t he have just used his regular transfer and then keep his grad transfer option available (could easily do an mba in a year and regraduate)
Your point is very valid in general, but, Jeff Driskel is not a good example for this discussion. Jeff's HS coach was new to the profession, and taught him very little. Jeff excelled there on natural talent. At UF, he was misused by Muschamp and three incompetent OCs and thrown into the fray before he was developed. He played through injuries and even walked off the field under his own power with a badly broken leg. He transferred and ran up more passing yards in one year at La Tech than he did in three at UF. He was also drafted into the NFL and was good enough to remain there for seven years. He is a great person who was abused by Florida coaches and fans, yet he has never uttered a single disparaging word about UF then or since. In my mind, Jeff represents UF well, everything considered.
My belief, but I have yet to find anything on the NCAA site to verify, is once you graduate you lose your freebie transfer or it becomes your grad transfer. If anyone has info on this please post.
The key with Tebow is they were limited in using him. Meyer and Mullen were sure not to put him in a position where he was in over his head. I don't think the red shirt rule matters much with players like Lagway. He probably won't be here 5 years anyways so I just wouldn't force anything. If it's natural to play him in garbage time or due to injury (God forbid) so be it, if he happens to play 4 games or less, use the redshirt.
Sure, but he's not and never would be a game changer is my point. He's good but not the best QB in that class as HS recruiting said.
Gotcha. I guess what I'm saying is he may not have been as good as recruiting services thought, but, he was much better than most Gator fans thought while he was under the influence of a Muschamp offensive mind.
I like Mertz and he seems to be a player respected by his teammates. He has his limitations but was solid and performed admirably under often difficult circumstances. Lagway, maybe he's the future but I will say this as Brown enters the portal. I'm betting he joins the list of Gator QBs who move on to other schools and excel and fans wonder why he didn't flourish here. Just sayin.....
With that schedule, I’ll take it and hope for some more defense. Just a little, our boys worked their asses off this year. I must say this is the most losses to win and pride I’ve ever taken in our team. I’m holding my head high. (Physically and metaphorically)
