don't nominate a criminal/fraud and don't ahve to worry about special election. deceive the voters and be subject to losing the seat. the pub party failed when vetting this applicant
The thing about Miller is crazy. Wonder if that’s a first, a member of Congress doing identity theft/credit card fraud against another member of congress? You’d think this would make it super easy for the Pubs. But then again the philosophical leader of the party (Trump) has reportedly engaged in similar shenanigans to bilk donors (signing them up for repeat donations). I wonder if that “MAGA Republican” sees the disconnect, or (more likely) he’s only outraged because he and his mother were victimized directly…
I agree with the premise. But I'd rather promote expelling shitty members than feel like they need to be protected.
I think in some states, if the governor appoints the replacement, it has to be from the same party. If it's a special election, it's open both parties.
If it's a House vacancy the governor calls for a special election to replace the member. If it's a Senate vacancy the governor appoints a replacement which may be followed by a special election depending on the length of the remaining term of the member and/or state law. The chances are that Santos will be replaced by Thomas Suozzi, a Democrat, who previously held the seat and decided to run for governor in 2022 rather than running for reelection to the House.
The reality is that Santos wasn't expelled for lying although his lies truly bordered on the absurd he was expelled for using campaign funds for personal expenses (Only Fans, Botox treatments, purchases from various upscale retailers, etc) on a massive scale including stunts to conceal the theft like making at least one nonexistent loan (don't recall if he did it multiple times or just once) to his campaign and then repaying the "loan" to himself with campaign funds.
Only when it's done on a massive scale. Too bad the same concern with self-dealing and conflicts of interests isn't applied to the presidency.
Good old Congressional GOP. They express outrage and expel a hapless indicted crook even as they debase themselves worshipping a far worse and thrice indicted crook. Have they no shame, no moral compass?
Bipartisan? I think the bipartisan report on Santos did him in; Menendez doesn’t have that….yet. What Menendez has are Turkish fingerparts on $400,000 cash and gold bars that were hidden in envelopes and closets his house, and a $100,000 Mercedes in his garage. Must be quite the saver on his $193,000 Senate salary.
The crazy thing here is that Santos retains most of the rights of being in congress until the end of the terms except for voting. And they took away his office already.
Perfect. Bowen Yang should keep the role Former Rep. George Santos, R-N.Y., is getting the movie treatment at HBO after getting booted from Congress last week. The Warner Bros. Discovery-owned premium cable giant confirmed Monday that it has optioned the rights to author Mark Chiusano’s nonfiction book “The Fabulist: The Lying, Hustling, Stealing, and Very American Legend of George Santos.” Frank Rich, known for his work as an executive producer on the Emmy-winning TV satires “Veep” and “Succession,” is executive producing the film adaptation, but in a nonwriting capacity, according to the company. The studio has tapped “Bad Education” screenwriter Mike Makowsky to write and executive produce the picture. I lean against expelling members short of a criminal conviction but appreciate that the frequency and severity of what he did makes it tough not to take action. Santos may ultimately get more exposure and money than he would have had he not been expelled. The fact that he's going to benefit from all this kinda reflects to me the really perverse incentives involved with elected office.
For a mere $200 you can get your very own George Santos, "former Congressional "Icon"' cameo: https://www.cameo.com/gads
