Typing as I listen… did good job to get a nine point lead in the second half .. and then we softened up. We didn’t guard well enough is the bottom line. We allowed em to shoot 61% from the field; Gave up 50 points. We just didn’t guard well enough to give ourselves a great chance. We reaped what we sewed tonite. Not gonna get 50/50 calls on the road… especially in the acc/sec challenge, and you gotta be able to push thru that. You gotta win by enough where those calls can’t effect you, and tonite we didn’t do that. i thought they made a lot of though twos. We probably fouled em too much. They probably got 8-10 free throws in the last minute and a half. Hit big shots, finished over us at rim, a little more physical than we were. Riley played a really good game. Other than that we allowed them to slow us down… we kept trying to drive in the spaces where there was nothing really there. They clearly bothered us in the second half. We had multiple opportunities to extend the lead. We weren’t able to do that and allowed them to have little hope; and we couldn’t withstand their rally. <thoughts on 4-guard lineup>: it’s not what we want to do to be honest. When we stay bigger- we defend better, rebound better. We stay within our offense better. We need guys to produce better if we are gonna play that way.
He got schooled when we went to the 4 guard lineup at the under 4 timeout. Wake got whatever they wanted on every possession. Maybe he should have stayed away from it. Maybe he should have something else to go to down the stretch when the team needs a stop. Throw a trap at them, some funky zone, anything to change it up a little. At this point, it can’t get any worse defensively.
Todd Golden leaves a lot to be desired defensively. One thing I loved about Mike White is he knew defense very well. We’d mix in zone during the game, press a bit, apply half court traps, quick doubles in the post. Instead we just sat back passively without a care in the world like we were just going through the motions and it didn’t matter because we’ll just outscore them.
MW would only leave his M2m when he absolutely had to. And even then he wouldn’t half the time. I can’t count how many times I wanted to throw something at the TV begging him to try something, anything. Many here can attest to it. We did run a bit of a different defense tonight, we were running the show doubles around the arc and hard doubles down low which worked well. The game turned when the refs took over. Yes we could have handled it better, but tonight wasn’t on Todd. jmo.
I generally agree… I think this is one of those rare games in which the officiating was objectively bad and overly one-sided. It truly did have a massive impact. I wasn’t a fan of our rotations tonite, but that didn’t lose the game.
Reminded me of Butler and USCE in the NCAAT We’ve got the lead , looking to stretch it , and a slew of tick tack and off ball fouls keeps them in it and changes complexion of the game on our end I thought some of the wrong guys were shooting and we had several impatient possessions in that same span
Ehh … we complained endlessly about how awful the offense was under White and w good reason. This style of hoops is more fun.
Golden’s teams aren’t generally known for bad defense. Maybe this will be a wake up call. Also tighten the rotation until Aberdeen can play team ball. Dude just comes in thinking he has the green light to chuck it.
Limit Aberdeen is an obvious, but maybe Richard should stay starting at the 3 with Pullin coming off the bench?
Nailed it. I, too, would compare this to the Butler swindle. I was there. It was criminal what they did. Those calls changed the momentum of the game and quite frankly, were not fouls.
During a game where you’re obviously knowing for awhile that a foul will get called on most bumps a zone defense would’ve been a much better option. No answer all night for 23 or the big. It’s inexcusable.
I thought the first 6 minutes or so of the game we were playing with a lot of intensity. I would have liked to see us come out with the same energy we had with Baylor last week. Valentine needs to retire. He's been bad for a very, very long time.
I agree. The way we lose now is better than the way we lost under White. If you can’t WIN , this is better than nothing.
