Guys.... 1. I have been watching and reading this thread for three days now. 2. Been watching Gator Football since 1966. 3. Played at Florida in the late 70's/early 80's. Having said the above, let me just say that I have gotten to that point where I am just sick of hearing that stupid, droning band play that all game long. Fact is: I have been sick of that display for two decades now. I much rather listen to Rocky Top played all game long than that repetitive trash that FSU plays. The Administration needs to do something to curtail this display. Here's WHY: What FSU does is TOTALLY different than what ALL other school bands do nationwide. And the sooner the Florida Administration realizes this, the better. Some on this thread may think that ALL we need to is just beat them on the field and that would negate their repeatable, droning efforts. Not so... it's not that simple. F.S.U. and it's band director have purposely and wisely chosen to play a repeating war chant that has two basic chord changes. Conversely, Rocky Top, although repetitive, has SEVERAL chord changes. For those reading this, thinking that all of this is B.S...bear with me. FSU's war chant is frustrating to hear. Whether as a player on the field or as a fan in the stands, you just want to stuff someone's band instrument down their throat! It drones on and on... and that chant can take your mind out of your game on the field. You're thinking about the next play, snap count, etc and you got that trash in your head. I NEVER had a problem with "Rocky Top" or, "Glory, Glory To Old Georgia," etc. F.S.U.'s war chant is different and their band director KNOWS this. When they played it over Petty's "I Won't Back Down"...that was it for me. Sorry, opposing schools and bands NEED to have a certain level of foundational respect for each other. My adamant request is that Florida's Administration stop this...or at least, curtail it down to only a certain number of times and places in the game for them to play that chant. I have other ideas but that's all for now. They can do what they want to do in Tallahassee. But when they come to our house, our turf... no more!
Hey Mr Leezard. If you were there late 70’s did you happen to know my first cousin Ray Lawrence. He played center from 77-80. Never got to spend much time around him. My aunt was high society and later married James Adkins Jr (Florida Supreme Court justice) so we didn’t get to see that side of the family much, but I believe he’s responsible for why we are all Gators.
Exactly as I said above. The visiting band gets a schedule. Said schedule says don’t play during 3rd to 4th qtr break. They did it anyway.
All that is fine. But the minute you don’t follow a supplied schedule you don’t get I cited back. We shared pregame and halftime. They were asked not to play during the 3rd to 4th qtr break. LSU shouldn’t be invited back either.
There is no "invitation "....FSU gets a ticket allotment and uses it as they want, just as UF does with its ticket allotment in Tally
Here you have a school, a band and a band director that blatantly did not follow the clear protocol given to them. I have held back and honestly, have not wanted to say this... But if this continues, I would not feel one bit of reservation in dropping these jerks from our schedule. We could always place Miami on our permanent schedule. Folks... we DON'T need F.S.U. on our schedule. They need us more than we need them.
If that is the case, do not let them into the stadium next time they are scheduled to come back. Allot tickets to the seats and sell them at a discount.
The problem is easily solved. Give them tickets. At the gate, deem their instruments over the size limit of items to be brought in.
In all seriousness, albeit a relatively new tradition, "Won't Back Down" is a tradition. I'm sure the only reason The Marching Future Chefs pulled that stunt is that the LSU band got away with it twice with no consequences. It will continue to happen unless some meaningful penalties are put in place.
Unfortunately, the more we carp about their ridiculous “war chant” the more emboldened and determined they become. I might add satisfied to that. I agree with the earlier poster who said the best way to quite them down is to beat them-soundly It won’t shut them up but it will take some air out of their horns.
I think anytime the home team has a full and raucous stadium but the opposing teams band can still impact the "home field advantage" something's off if we had 50k show up to a noon game I get it - but they need to leave trumpets at home
Wait a minute. Are you saying that you expect courtesy and civility from FSU? If so, we need to talk.
Spread them out across the top of the NEZ..will take them awhile to get up to their seats and back down for half time..limiting the time they can play lol
Leave it to the Noles Band to smuggle in kazoos. Now that would be a real interesting war chant to hear.
We beating them and their band playing that stupid chant too loud all game long are different things. My wife even commented on it and she asked me why this was allowed. This thread is way too long for me to read but as I understand the rule; the sound level of whatever each school is producing in the stands (not crowd noise) should be equal. Therefore, anyone can measure this with a dB meter. The data on the sound levels should be sent to FSU AD with the proviso no FSU band will be allowed at the game in 2025. If FSU wants to measure the sound levels at next years game, proceed.
