Interesting conversation with a former college coach

We really weren’t that far from 8-4 this year. There’s not a whole lot of difference between tgat and 4-8. It’s slightly above average or slightly below average. If Shemar had an elite lb beside him and an elite pass rusher up front, our defense probably jumps 50 spots in rankings. We are far from Georgias talent but not far from 8-4. There’s a vast gap between 8-4 and 12-0 in the sec. Even the average sec teams are putting in effort to win these days. With Texas and Oklahoma coming, it’s only getting harder. The days of only playing four legit teams a year are in the rear view mirror. 8-4 is a decent record in the sec going forward. In past years, 8-4, may have meant you lost to every team with a pulse. Looking at next years schedule, that would be a step in the right direction.

 

Unfortunately, I can't picture anything better than 6-6 next year and 8-4 is the absolute ceiling going forward unless something really unexpected (at least by me ) happens. I really wish a pro minor league would be formed and we could get the college game back to what it was originally intended to be even though the quality of play would obviously go way down. That is the only way I see UF competing for champs again. I can't picture the people in power at UF ever wallowing around in the mud enough to compete for champs in the SEC in the current environment. If no minor league is formed I would wholeheartedly endorse moving to a conference more in line with our academic standards. Then we could possibly have a decent record once in a while and possibly make the playoffs.

 

Since strength of schedule matters very little, hopefully we will be more strategic when choosing our out of conference opponents going forward.

 

With the playoffs expanding to 12 I would think it would matter a great deal, much like March Madness no?

I don't avoid some threads or some posters because an accurate recitation of facts hurts my feelings. I avoid some threads and some posters because of the hyper-entitled, vitriol laced pap that says nothing that we don't already know - except that poster X, Y or Z is really mad today and really disappointed that things aren't going better. We get it. We're all a little bent out of shape these days. But even talking about firing Billy at this juncture is straight up stupid. Hopefully, shaking their collective fists at the sky eventually loses its charm for some of the inveterate whiners on this board, unlikely though that may be. Maybe the off season and a chance to decompress a little is a blessing in disguise for some. GG!

 

People who talk about firing CBN are clearly not in the know or know how things work behind the scenes. The contract setup with CBN was to give him exactly 4 years to rebuild and see the return on investment. He is with us at the start of 2025.

 

Which is as relevant as Nebraska's MNCs. Recruits were three years old when we last won a MNC.

That is well known and poached by every top school in the nation, including at least two (soon to be three) major programs in-state.

Which is also utterly irrelevant. Cal, Virginia, South Carolina, Colorado, Kansas, Illinois, and many other schools are also "flagships." As much relevance to being a top team as being a "blueblood" to our opponents, who do not care.

This is the here and now. Three straight losing seasons, and five in the past 11 years (prior to 2013, one has to go back nearly 70 years to count up five losing seasons). A middle-of-the-pack P5 team, and (soon to be three), and 6th in the SEC. With Texas and Oklahoma coming on board, it will only get tougher.

Our so-called "swagger" has been beaten out of us a long time ago. We are entitled to NOTHING. We have to earn it back.

And we damned sure can! But it won't be in a year or two.

Norvelle $8M( won 12)
Lanning (Ore) $7M ( won 11)

Seems like u can pay $$7M and kick ass just as easily as u can pay $7M and win 5. It's all about the "process", the hiring process that is.

 

Meh. If you consider the list of unproven HCs making big money based on hopes of a rapid return to glory that hasn't happened yet, our situation is not exactly unique. To your point(?), the fault may well lie in the hire itself; or it may be in the extent to which the program was allowed to deteriorate for over a decade. The inherent circumstances a specific program must deal with absolutely play a role. It might even be a combination of factors, including a still fairly "young" HC who badly needs to get his shit together in a couple of vital areas, ASAP. But one way or the other, Lanning has established himself in record time at Oregon - albeit at an arguably more stable program that doesn't have a history of eating its own or making multiple shaky hires. DL obviously deserves tremendous credit and I'm as envious as the next guy of Oregon's success - especially sitting here looking at three consecutive losing seasons while listening to talk of patience and process. But Norville didn't actually do much better than BN has in his first two years at FSU, and Kiffin is a talented play caller with the character of a feral child. He also hasn't won anything of real note to date. Bottom line: Life can be irksome and difficult sometimes. Who knew?
