Yes, I recall Spikes being disciplined for a not so sportsman-like eye-poking incident during a game. I would like to remind everyone who hasn't played the game to take heed of what goes on underneath that big pile...it isn't a group hug I can assure you and thinking otherwise is somewhat Pollyanna-ish.

 

I would love nothing more than to have Mullen as a dedicated OC.

 

Yep. The read seems like "it" in terms of schematic innovations. No chance to "Spurrier" the league for 1/2 a decade like we did in the 1990s. Recruiting is now 90+% of the equation (used to be about 65-70%).

 

Anyone who played knows. Anyone who played and won knows you keep it under the pile or after the win is in hand (spikes senior day kick). Everything (emotions, personal glory, etc) is subservient to the team winning and not letting your brothers down. Great teams have that. Great coaches demand it.

 

With 16 career receptions who saw the writing on the wall that he wasn't going to beat out Hansen? I appreciate him giving his all as a Gator, but this opens up a roster spot for someone who can likely help us win more. Best of luck to him!

 

The biggest issue with Billy's rebuild is this: Usually a 2nd year coach benefits from an improved D while the offense takes longer to come around due to the personnel needing replacement/redevelopment. In this case, the D personnel needed major infusion of talent and development. Hence why the 2nd year did not see major improvement. I am impressed with the O improving in spite of new QB and a brand new OL. There are greenshoots here and there...but ways to go...

If we can have a top 30 Defense paired with a top 30 O we will be fine next year...

 

Generally new coaches see success in year 2 because they are able to utilize the best players the previous coach left and they have some time to fix the problems the old coach would have never fixed. IMO the problem Napier ran into with this expectation was too many of the best players he inherited aren't here anymore. If we had Hopper and Antuan Powell-Ryland we probably find a way to win 2 more games. If this is because Napier didn't want them here or it's the new normal with the increases in transfers, it just is what it is.

 

Agree and to add, he somehow decided to rebuild his roster with recruits than portal players.

 

First, I'm a CBN supporter. I also don't claim to be a football expert. Just being honest here, CBN doesn't seem to have the feel for the game. Is it only opposing coaches that know how to adjust?

Not a bad take, just that Napier decided to soft sell the notion of immediate help via the transfer. He got pieces, just not like others did. It helps in years 3 and 4 as you grow you own, but not this year.

He either was not prepared (likely) or he decided that his agreement with the UF brain trust gave him enough cover (2024 and likely 2025) to eat wins this year for a 2024 wind change and 2025 movement in earnest. I personally am leaning towards his not truly appreciating the new normal, which is a damn awful mess.

 

Unfortunately history shows Year 3 is usually the lean year for new coaches. Usually the best players from the old coach are now gone and you haven’t completely restocked the cupboard with your own players, mostly because pretty much all new coaches have a lousy recruiting class Year 1. But Napier is kind of doing things differently so who knows what his schedule is. He’s not losing much of anyone so it’s hard to see how it gets any worse.
