He said it looks like a hate crime. Probably because they are Palestinian and there is a lot of Islamophobia (and anti-semitism) in the US at the moment. The last sentence of the article said they have not yet, however, determined if it is a hate crime.
I’m aware that he said that. It’s why I asked him the question. Maybe there was another article that he read that gave the impression that it looks like a hate crime.
The Palestinian shooting victims "were confronted by a white male with a handgun" who shot at least four rounds "without speaking," according to a news release from Burlington Police Chief Jon Murad. "Preliminary investigation has determined that all three were visiting the home of one victim’s relatives in Burlington for the Thanksgiving holiday. The three were walking on Prospect Street when they were confronted by a white male with a handgun," Murad said. "The suspect was on foot in the area. Without speaking, he discharged at least four rounds from the pistol and is believed to have fled on foot." "Two were wearing keffiyehs at the time of the assault. At this time, there is no additional information to suggest the suspect’s motive, such as statements or remarks by the suspect," police said.
Good point. In gun crazed U.S. people get shot for pulling into the wrong driveway or ringing the wrong doorbell.
Sounds like a likely hate crime given their race and that the guy attacked them on their own property, but you can’t be 100% until they catch the shooter.
Sounds justifiable. Same thing if someone brushes against you in a crowded elevator, although you need to be careful about ricochets.
Arrest made. No evidence of motive. Police detained Jason J. Eaton, 48, around 3:30 p.m. ET Sunday, Burlington police said Sunday night. Evidence collected during a search of Eaton's home several hours after he was detained "gave investigators and prosecutors probable cause to believe that Mr. Eaton perpetrated the shooting," police said. He was then arrested and is scheduled to be arraigned Monday, police said. Police did not immediately provide any information on a possible motive. 3 Palestinian college students shot in Burlington, Vermont, police say
It only says the police didn’t immediately provide evidence of motive. Doesn’t necessarily mean they don’t have any.
Fair enough. Just updating as to whether there was evidence of motive in the linked piece, not suggesting there was none in hand or to be found. I suspect it may come out; the question will be whether it is enough (and admissible) to support those specific charges
There’s a lot of wickedness and porn in the Bible. Not a good read for the mentally deficient (as he looks to be).
