What bothers me more is how we played "Won't Back Down" immediately before proceeding to do precisely that. We deserve a cease and desist letter from Petty's estate after Saturday.
Naw I agreed with the OP, the band was sickening to hear. I was responding to another poster who called it silly
And I'm happy to call that silly crap out also. Bands are what make college football special. Don't like it....be this guy
Don't spit on them, don't have signs mocking the QBs injury, run up the score and make them pay for not being very good. If that's what we did, they either wouldn't have pulled that shit in the 4th quarter, or they would've looked like even bigger jackasses for doing it, and we'd be laughing all the way home for ruining their season. Winning fixes everything and I think most of us are tired of losing. And this was a very beatable FSU team.
It wasn’t that they brought their band, it was the volume of it. Like someone placed them right next to the audio equipment for the tv audience. I don’t expect to tune into a game at the Swamp and think it’s being played in Tallahassee
The solution is simple, pull the same crap in Tallahassee when we go. Doesn't matter if it sounds good, just make the one song they play every two seconds sound terrible by playing over it. If the rules of decorum of one band playing at a time don't apply during the Tom Petty tribute, I don't see why they should apply at all. And we should do the same thing whenever we play in Baton Rouge. No reason for this to happen when it's only an issue with these two teams.
To be honest I don't care that they played during TP. Other teams have done it and hearing the chant during a broadcast isn't a new thing. If UF won the game or was winning this thread probably doesn't exist.
What passes for our answer to the chop is straight up lame. We always start playing it after we pick up a couple of first downs on our opening drive and it looks like we're rolling. What's it called? "False Start"? They were trying to drown out the chop with it on Saturday and it's like using a fly swatter to drive a nail.
It's annoying and turnabout is fair play. This is far from the first time this happens, so UF should send a message. The best way of doing that IMO is having the UF band play over theirs when we go to Tallahassee and Baton Rouge. Either they take your approach and "don't care," or they're annoyed but they have no leg to stand on.
Okay, I am going to show my age. LOL I was at the Dec. 1, 1973 Florida - FSU game, at The Swamp. Yes, that irritating FSU Semi Hole band was there. Yes, they played the War Chant and everything they had in their program. Yes, the play constantly, before the game, every offensive Gator play, while the Gator Band played, and during time outs. They stopped playing late in the 4th quarter when the Gators had run up the score to 49 to ZERO! That was almost 50 years ago. Sorry to say low-no class acts at Half Ass U have not changed much.
Well then we should get ready for more of this crap. If you don't care, good for you, but I think it takes away from the experience. And yes, winning is much more important than this, but that doesn't mean this doesn't matter.
Did you see how many fsu fans were in the Swamp? I was really disheartened that they had the most fans there that I have ever seen. The most appalling aspect of it was how many were in the west stands where the alumni sit. Couldn't believe Gators fans sold their tix to them in such large numbers. Early in the game there were a lot of people doing their silly chop, and I thought they were Gators mocking them. Then I realized who they were. They had a better attendance in the Swamp Saturday night than miami has at a home game.
Perhaps going forward we only allow their band in the Swamp if they agree to be good sports when we to the Petty tribute. It is common courtesy (used to be, anyway) that bands alternated and respected the home teams’ time of ceremony or tribute. I appreciate that our band, to the best of my recollection, is courteous. The noles have an impressive band but they shouldn’t have to be told to follow common courtesy. Let’s tell them and then hold them to it. We can agree to the same courtesy at the glorified erector set in Tally. Otherwise we need to be blaring our fight song (or You Can Call Me Al, a fav of mine) when they do their opening spear stuff.
It was about 50% FSU fans....this year there were still way too many (How many FSU fans are too many: 1 in my book), but nothing like that miserable year.
