I would question the sanity of a coach that would come into this mess against that ‘24 schedule. It would be career suicide.
I want Billy to succeed as i’ve wanted every Gator coach to win and the Gators to win every game. Never will I root for them to lose no matter how bad of a record we have but, if some folks take the blinders off…..they would see this tenure is more Zook’ish than anything else: 1. Top 5 (for now) incoming recruiting class lead by a 5* QB (Lagway and Chris Leak) 2. Spent first two years with the same OC (Napier and Ed Zaunbrecher) before getting a new OC (we hired Larry Fedora going into the 04 season; we’ll see who Napier hires as OC) 3. Both coaches first seasons had preseason Heisman favorites/candidates at QB (Rex Grossman and AR15) that the previous staff left behind and squandered them. 4. Both coaches known for clamping up in the clutch (even though Zook had more “signature” wins and had a “better” record vs our rivals) and having head scratching and hair pulling losses in their first two seasons 5. both coaches had teams who wilted physically as the games went on leading to late game collapses. I just don’t see how more talent coming in will overcome the coaching deficiencies we’ve seen the past two seasons.
Yep, and he had an IDENTICAL record to Billy Napier. And guess who replaced him, the guy everyone on this board hopes Billy can be. It would be funny if it wasn't so sad. Correction: Taggert was 9-12 with 3 to go in year 2, Napier 11-11. End of year totals were identical.
All of these coaches got the job from a plug being pulled. Sometimes an easy call. Sometimes hard. Sometimes hitting reset works. Sometimes a hot shot replacement gives you Jimbo.
There will be folks across “Gator Nation” who continue to blame Mullen for problems after we hire the next guy. It’s bizarre the irrational hatred some have for him.
It makes no sense to let Billy go unless we have an upgrade hire already agreed upon (in principle). And since SS doesn't do that, it would be disastrous. We're a mess. We HAVE to give someone a real chance to fix the mess. 2 years isn't enough. Not in this conference with the talent deficit he inherited. 3 probably isn't enough, even though I'd agree we should see measurable improvement by then.
Gators have been playing football for 117 years and in that period of time they have had 25 head coaches. They have had fifteen great years with two coaches and the rest of the coaches were on average fair. The odds of finding another SOS or UM are slim. Accept mediocrity because that is what it has been through out most of our history and I'm afraid it will continue.
Yep, and I DO NOT BLAME THE PLAYERS WE HAVE for that wins and losses record... That was all on the coaches. Stick that in your pipe and smoke it, becasue you obviously get high. We will be better than 5 win team next yer, I say 7 wins in the rock bottom...
The coaches around football know x’s ans o’s . What they are missing is the talent to show what they obv already know
Actually kind of glad we didn't get bowl eligible. It will force Napier to not only recruit new players but re-recruit existing ones, look at the portal hard whether the player is in it or not. Target some players on other teams and go after them with some cash, tampering be damned (look at Bear Alexander from UGA to USC last year). Then use this extra time that you would have spent coming up with a game plan for some crappy team that will beat the brakes off us in a month and instead, go get some better assistant coaches including an OC.
Okay... but just so you know 16 incoming commits early enrollees. And we can still add to that class with other high school recruits and portal players.
The FSU loss got to me, I got my bitch session out, guess I had to vent, UF sports mean alot to me, especially football and this community. I bleed O and B and I desperately want coach to reel in that great recruiting class. I'm hopeful that we pick up a few more. I'm moving on to next year, I'm 100% behind Napier turning things around. Hope the basketball team beats Wake and Billy kills it early signing day and in the portal.
I was a party to an interesting conversation in a casual setting recently involving a member of the Florida Achievement Support Trust, or Florida Victorious, the group that has supplanted The Gator Collective and supplies among other things the NIL money for our players. This person told us that Napier was getting two years of absolute grace, that barring anything untoward he isn’t going anywhere the first two seasons, no matter what. 2024, however, is an all new day, Napier must show “improvement” next year or his buyout will be paid and they will move on. This person also said that “improvement” might not be judged solely in wins and losses. No clarification was given on that.
