So after years of reading and responding I’ll finally ask what is angst about running when there are more than 6 defenders playing the run. Football has been played for decades with the Gap 8, 6-2, 5-3, 5-2, 4-4, 4-3, 3-4, 3-5 (all 7 and 8 man fronts) when the forward pass was a novelty and teams consistently ran into and on ‘stacked boxes”. Also, when you run off tackle you are only facing 1/2 of the numbers in box and should have a parity or a +1 depending on play design. Of course execution is critical but it appears that lingo passes for knowledge for a fair sized contingent here. Yes, throwing might be a better option from a number perspective but not necessarily the only option.
Well the good news is there is zero reason to coach conservatively this game as the season is over if you lose. Leave it all on the field! Get crazy!
I tend to agree with you on FSU TD's as they have a great receiving corps and skill players and even with a backup QB will likely score a lot of points. But just maybe our D slows them down a bit. Pressure their new QB. Be aggressive and get the crowd into the game. I think Brown changes things with his speed and running ability. Just might be able to take a little pressure off the O-line, open lanes for Etienne and MJ, and spread things out enough with RPO/runs to the outside negating the stacked boxes. We'll see. But as you say, hopefully the coaches plan as such and call the game to suit MB's talent. Break the mold. Give the offense a chance to win the game. Gators win straight up.
Coach conservatively? What season have you been watching? I’m on my second hand with the number of 4th & Dumb calls. Our only hope (and not much of one at that) in this game is to play conservatively and let SWAC do all of the beating itself with stupid decisions.
I was thinking maybe the reason we play so many 3 man fronts is that the secondary isn't very good. But it doesn't seem like the 3 man front is helping in that regard either so just get rid of it and go to 4 or 5 and let it be man coverage. One thing I have noticed is that the beg tall half ass u receiver can be counted on for at least a couple of drops per game. Unfortunately he can take one to the house as well.
Running into 7 and 8 man fronts worked at one time and that's one reason that scores were 7-6 types on a regular basis. In Spurriers 3 seasons as the starting QB we scored 30 or more twice in 1964, twice in 65, and 3 times in 66. We've scored more than 30 five times this season alone and lost 3 of them. Consistently running into stacked boxes and we wouldn't have come close to scoring 30+ in five games this season, and who would we have beaten?
