NEW YORK (AP) — Oscar-winning actor Susan Sarandon and “Scream” star Melissa Barrera were each dropped by Hollywood companies after making comments on the Israel-Hamas war that some deemed antisemitic.

Spyglass Media Group, the production company behind the upcoming “Scream VII,” acknowledged Barrera’s exit from the horror franchise. The Mexican-born actress, who starred in “In the Heights” and the two recent “Scream” installments, had posted statements on Instagram Stories calling the war “genocide and ethnic cleansing.”
“Gaza,” she wrote, “is currently being treated like a concentration camp.”

Spyglass said in a statement that its position “is unequivocally clear: We have zero tolerance for antisemitism or the incitement of hate in any form, including false references to genocide, ethnic cleansing, Holocaust distortion or anything that flagrantly crosses the line into hate speech.”

Late Wednesday, Barrera posted a statement on Instagram Stories about her firing.
“First and foremost I condemn antisemitism and Islamophobia. I condemn hate and prejudice of any kind against any group of people,” she wrote.

Cancel culture strikes again? Or this doesn't count?

Actors that are politically active run the risk of backlash. Susan is not a newbie to it and has been outspoken for years so Im sure she doesnt care and isn’t surprised. Mellissa though. This is a crime. The Scream franchise got good again with the reboot. Now they will have to kill her offscreen. Lame.

I saw the Scream reboot and actually enjoyed Melissa. Guess they’ll have to pay Neve Campbell to come back, which I won’t mind because I like her too.

There needs to be a different word than “anti-semitism” for people expressing negative opinions of Israel. It’s just not the same thing as hating the Jewish people simply for being Jewish.

Any criticism of Israel or its policies is going to be labeled antisemitism by some. There’s zero nuance.

I despise Sarandon but this is still wrong. The Right never cared about the principle. They are wholly unprincipled, only about power and oppression

    It's closer to anti-zionism than anti-semitism.

Agreed. I hate the conflation of the two. It's not fair to lump Susan Sarandon expressing a political opinion in with Nazis marching around chanting "Jews will not replace us" etc. To call that the same thing is at best wildly misleading and inaccurate. At worst its intentionally dishonest.

Normally I would say over reaction, but I really don't care about Hollywood companies or actors/actresses.

I agree. One can have a critical view of Israel and not necessarily be an anti semite. People throwing around that term have gone way over the top.

I heard a Palestinian who lives in Israel, and from his perspective when some people want the eradication of Israel, they want the eradication of a Jewish nationalist state, where Palestinians are often treated like second class citizens and they want be be able to live freely in what they view as their homeland. They don’t necessarily want the eradication of displacement of Jews.

Clearly Hamas and some Palestinians do want the eradication of Jews and even for those that don’t the concept of a majority Palestinians living side by side in a state with Jews seems totally unrealistic to me.

While I disagree with what both actresses said I don’t find either of their comments prima facia antisemitic.

Sarandon wasn’t critical of any specific Israeli policies.

“There are a lot of people that are afraid, afraid of being Jewish at this time, and are getting a taste of what it feels like to be a Muslim in this country, so often subjected to violence,”

    I.e., “they deserve it”

F her and her false equivalence.

Freedom of speech does not mean freedom from consequences, and hers are deserved.

It isn’t necessarily “they deserve it” although it could be construed that way.

It is just another example of how we will take something that has multiple interpretations and punish people for the worst possible interpretation. That happens left, right, Jewish, Muslim, Christian etc. All part of what we used to call cancel culture.

    That’s a reach. And a far cry from “anti-Semitic”

    Give me a break.

This is the “One Way or Another, All or Nothing” world that we have created for ourselves. Fun, isn’t it??
