There are many things we can do to effectively discourage illegal immigration.

But the right wing is not serious about any practical solutions. They’ll rather fly illegals around with tax money for political theater and elect xenophobes that promise walls paid by Mexico.

Is this section of wall that Biden and the Democrats decided was NOT racist to build and would be a great deterrent or a section of the wall Buden and the democrats decided was without any question racist to build and would never work and be a waste of money?
We should probably make sure we know before committing… I’d hate to be labeled racist or wasteful for supporting the wrong section of the wall.

90% of all illicit drugs coming into the US don't climb walls or cross rivers to get to the US. They come in through legal ports. A wall won't help the war on drugs.

And yes, there are millions of people around the globe who are starving who would love the opportunity to come to the US to work. The majority of them will never get that opportunity, nor have the means to get to our border. But many do. These are the ones that walk from Mexico, C. America, or S. America. A wall to them isn't a deterrent. It's just another obstacle to overcome to get relief for their desperation, which is why they left their home country in the first place. All the wall does for them is create a chance of death or injury. And the wall doesn't help us, because it's stops nobody. If that's the intent of the wall, it's a complete and total failure. Unless hurting and/or killing fellow humans is the actual goal.

The worst part in all this is we have an actual demand for immigrant labor. A demand that's been rather constant for generations with a few periods of significant recession. While not perfect and doesn't answer all the issues, the only logical step is instead of spending billions on a boondoggle wall, spend money to build immigration centers were immigrants can come, sign up for a guest visa, and have businesses that need said labor pay for them to get to the jobs the employers need, and immigrants want. No need for a wall, and no need for people to hurt or kill themselves falling off it.

Twice, bipartisan Senate committees came up with this exact plan. Twice, it's been shot down. Again, does an expanded guest worker program solve all our border issues? No. But things would be a lot better than current.

that is what we have been doing instead of

    guest worker program
economic and security assistance in the countries these people are fleeing from

neither side wants to fix the problem, they want to fundraise and politic off of it

Hopefully they came down hard on China and Mexico on this issue and lip service and minor changes will not be tolerated without banking sanctions on everyone who touches the trade, including the shippers

I call BS. A 30 foot barrier will have an impact. Sooner or later people who embark on the journey will learn that there is a wall.

Whether or not parts of the wall are cost efficient solutions I can’t say but to assert it doesn’t do anything is ridiculous.

Your arguments seem to be since immigrants may hurt themselves between walls, deserts, coyotes, cartels, geopgraphic hazards along the way we should put them all on 747s first class so that they are kept safe.

It's so sad that so many Californians are willing to take that risk to get out.

    Wait .. what?

Agree. Sorta weird to say the "wall isnt stopping anyone" when the wall is so difficult to climb that injuries are prevalent. Thats sort of the point

It's like saying prison barbed wire doesnt work because escapees end up hospitalized from the failed attempt.

Isn’t this Trump’s wall that Biden is building without being Trump while building it ?

I think Mexico should pay for the injuries. They paid to build that wall.

Who has the wall stopped? Read the article. It's not a deterrent. It only causes harm, while costing billions to build and maintain. What's the use?

And no, I don't think we should spend money giving immigrants first class tickets either. But if they show up on our doorsteps willing to work, and there's plenty of demand for their labor, why stop supply from meeting demand?

An expanded guest worker program isn't a cure all for our border issues. But far better solution than a wall that is ineffective at stopping people, and only causes them harm.

And prison barbed wire is so effective, prisons don't need guards at night? Or, without the guards, barbed wire is just an obstacle to overcome for escape?

Same goes for the border wall. Without guards, people will climb it. And they will get hurt or killed in the process. Sure, we could man the wall. But at 24 X 7, at current staffing levels, there could only be a guard every 1/3 mile. And that's working 8 hour shifts, 365 days a year, no time off, no sick days, etc.

with a guest worker program we could hire immigrants to man the wall. And have Mexico pay for it! Problem SOLved!

You do what prisons do. You use cameras and send people to a trouble spot.

To be clear, I'm not a fan of the current wall "solution", but to say it does nothing is silly. The fear of such injuries alone will keep many from even trying it... Just like barbed wire.

Heck we use barbed wire around some of our property at work. I don't pay guards.
Barbed wire is a deterrent to the majority... Sorta like the wall is.

With armed guards waiting at the small exit?

Tunneling is an anomaly, not a widespread solution for them.

It would be more cost effective for the US govt to incentivize US companies to build manufacturing and service jobs, schools, and soccer fields throughout Latin America. Capitalism based Imperialism is underrated.
