Okay .. I just saw it for the first time … how the hell do you gator chomp when you’re supposedly a top 10 team needing a miracle 4th and 17 and game ending field goal to beat a 5 win team at your place … great culture Drinks built up there …

 

Definitely a killer there. It would have forced them to use a time out and could have altered their play calling after they got the ball back. I’d love to be a fly on the wall during the soon to come team meeting to see if that’s even brought up. If it isn’t then that’s all I need to know about Billy.

 

Both. Our secondary is still inexperienced, lacks strength and tackles poorly. Our only SEC capable LB is out for the remainder of the year due to injury. Our LB portal transfers have not met expectations. Need another rush end as well.

and also asking our defense to hold 4 straight plays without penalty and Mizzou only really needing 30 yards to be in range. Id say odds of that happening were 10%,,,and yet we nearly pulled it off.

 

i guess the question now … how much do you put THAT on coaching? Is it the coach’s responsibly to remind players at this level to not go oob in that spot? Also, how much of a factor was the nearly botched handoff?
I’ve banged on Napier’s situation coaching at times… but I find no fault on that series.

I think most have an issue with the play selection that led to the FG. Those calls weren’t designed to get a 1st down and ice the game. Those calls were designed to ensure the FG attempt occurred, and then hope the defense held. Hence calling plays not to lose, instead of calling plays to win.

It’s that mindset I have an issue with. Because it is the mindset of a NFL coach, and not a college coach. The Commander’s coach has a similar mindset, and it has led to losses because the Commander’s defense couldn’t hold serve.

 

In the military, poor discipline and decision making is the fault of the commander. I hold the same expectation of a coaching staff at this level of competitive sports.

 

Is Todd Grantham still our defensive coordinator? It sure looked like it on 4th and 17. I watch the higher caliber defenses like Alabama and Georgia. On 4th and long, they tend to rush one or two more players than the offensive line can handle. Most of the time the QB doesn't even get the throw off. And if he does, it's normally a quick short throw and the rest of the defense rallies to the ball. I just hate seeing the QB get back, survey the whole field and then throw it twenty yards without one of our defensive players being anywhere near him.

There were 3 total time outs called during that series … did we actively remind and encourage staying in bounds ??? Impossible to know, but with a young team and backup QB it certainly should have been mentioned, if the player still brain farted, then it is what it is

I think you’re onto something, but I’d be willing to bet that the QB would hit a quick check down with nobody in tackling distance.

 

Ok. I stand corrected. But, I do think Napier was concerned about ball security at this juncture.

 

i don’t agree with that mindset, but arguing we should have been more aggressive on 1st, 2nd and 3rd downs… ok. I guess that is kinda debatable.
Going for it on 4th??? Nah…. Even my dog knows better. And my dog doesn’t even like football.
