What really grinds my gears is eating at a decent ethnic restaurant (e.g., Chinese or Mexican) and hearing Western pop music. There used to be an Indian restaurant here that had Bollywood music videos playing on the tvs, and that just made it a more fun experience to me.

Pavarotti over a good meal = indigestion :p. Your point about instrumental is well taken. I wouldn't want VanHalen at Arby's either. I'm not even really a fan of VanHalen, but push back on those who claim that Eddie's guitar musicianship is vapid. Part of that stems from watching a documentary about the band and Alex telling a story of going on dates while Eddie was sitting on his bed at home practicing. When Alex came home, Eddie was still practicing.

Django seems to me what you would have heard if Hemingway's life had a soundtrack. Like I picture sitting in his living room and hearing that playing down the hall.

How do people here feel about Boy George/Culture Club?

I think the 45 with Karma Chameleon may have been my first record - think I was in kindergarten and just loved that song. I still do for some reason. Maybe just nostalgia. Do You Really Want to Hurt Me is another song I like a lot. I watched Boy George recently on an episode of Club Random with Bill Maher. Very funny individual and somehow a little different than I would have expected because I don't think I ever listened to a long-form discussion with him. He kept trying to convince Bill Maher than Yoko Ono has a bunch of good music out there. Maher wasn't buying it but pledged to investigate further, lol.

Its pretty wild that Stephane Grapelli played with Django and Paul Simon, like completely different times in the imagination

Well I guess its possible that someone who got older and richer became less of a reactionary. A lot of artists did some questionable shit in those times (like Bowie flirting with Nazi iconography), but that rant from Clapton was really ugly.

I am reading an odd autobiography of Richard Lloyd. He is the "other" guitarist from Television. You need not be a fan of TV or Lloyd to enjoy this book. The part I'm at, he just sat down at a table with Richard Hell to watch Tom Verlaine's first open mic at a place in the village. this is already 40% in. Turns out this guy as a teen hung with Jimi, JL Hooker, played on stage with Muddy Waters, hung with Zep - in fact barfed all over their dressing room. His buddy, Velvert took guitar lessons with Hendrix. They were backstage in JL Hookers dressing room playing his guitar w/o permission & broke a string. They found a replacement. Hooker is on stage trying to tune while playing & has a wth moment. They strung it the wrong way b/c Velvert had learned from Lefty Hendrix. I assume the next 60% deals a lot with the early 70s NY scene....in fact he just saw the dolls @ Max's. I find that scene fascinating.

speaking of which....I never knew Hell's Blank gen was a rip off.

Those are the only two songs I’m familiar with. Karma Chameleon is a great song.

All my phishhead friends are super into KGLW. I've listened to them a bit, definitely way more rock than Phish.

they are coming to St. Augustine. Some Phish & Goose guys were at 1 of KG's shows. It's a super weird crowd. There are rockers, psych band fans, hippies, jam band types, etc. In the parking lot before & after the show, we got cornered by a retiree Widespread fan who's a gizzhead. After we got away from him, we all agreed that all we knew about Widespread was 1. there's a fat guy & 2. their fans are really annoying. KGLW & Daniel Donato seem to be pulling me into the jambandverse. IMO, they are jam bands for people who don't like jam bands (& also for those who do)

for the next record after this ^^^, they put out an entirely synth pop alb, but each song on the thrash metal alb has a spiritual counterpart on the synth pop alb.....here's motor spirit's spiritual brother-song.

Gonna take adv of a music thread on TH. Just discovered this guy. I think he's amazing. While listening to his music is good, his low budget videos are masterful & mesmerizing to me. He's got the ole cowboy whistling & yodeling down. he's bonafide.

I mean who wants to die having not seen a guy in a cape on a skateboard covering Heart of Glass? not me

Don't they put out like 2 albums a year or something crazy? Also, funny you mentioned Goose, cause thats the other band all the Phishheads love. They've even popped up on my Sirius/XM
