Omg….. I wanted to give that a “funny” and “best post ever” rating.

This is what turned me into a Zappa fan. It’s brilliant, musically. But, completely irreverent, lyrically. Love it.

I only did 5, but Van Halen would make my top 10 twice. Both Hagar and Roth editions were fantastic.

Really great list. Petty is my personal #1, but I was using influence as a criteria.

I get that, but they are actually really good.
Dave is an incredibly versatile musician.

And right now their relevance is very important in a pop saturated culture. They maybe the purest rock band making waves these days. They may be what helps rock survive... And yes, I'm serious.

Does anyone have the Doors twice (Morrison and the guy they brought in in the early 2000s)? :)

    Weird one here...
But Whitesnake's Slip of The Tongue album/tour is a top 5 personally for me. Saw them on my 18th birthday in Ft Myers. That lineup was legendary. Coverdale's soulful voice with Steve Vai and Adrian Vandenberg (Mostly touring only on that album due to an injury) on guitars, Riddy Sarzo (Ozzy/Riot) and the legendary Tommy Aldridge on drums. With Glenn Hughes (Deep Purple/Sabbath) and Richard Page (Mr. Mister) adding their work.

10 years of that lineup would have them high on a lot of lists. Had a real Zeppelin feal to it. (Coverdale's chops have always had a little bit of Plant influence)

If you think I'm crazy. Dial it up and listen. Quite a few legends on that album.

Cool story. OK song. Too bad they put those strings all over it.

Because Zeppelin sounds nothing like the musicians they ripped off.

Hey……and I was mostly just poking fun at you.
As for Van Halen, since I’m really not a fan, at all, I initially left them off my list. But, when I was proofing it, I realized their omission. They really are one of the greats imo. Just not my taste.

It's your list, leave them off. VH would not make my top 500.

Wow! I could definitely see them outside of a Top 10. But, I mean, the total body of work, the overall musicianship, and one of the most innovative and technically proficient lead guitarists of all time? I would respectfully disagree lol.

Excessive guitar wanking is a point deduction, might move someone out of the Top 500. I'll take the unassuming melodic twang of Mike Mills & Peter Buck, thank you very much. :)

It's not about how well they play their instruments. It's about how much I like them and I don't like VH. Some of my favorite bands of all time were comprised of people who weren't especially good musicians.

If technical competence was the measure, those Asian kids that shred on Youtube videos would comprise the Top 10, and would be rounded out by Yngwie Malmsteen

I humbly submit for your opinion. But, I do get your point. Also agree with what @dangolegators is getting to.

I think anyone can appreciate the skill, but this is like the polar opposite of stuff I get into, it makes me feel nothing.

Yep. It’s amazing to appreciate the skills. A bit overwhelming in large doses, though.

I like classical and jazz, I think that's where I get the most mileage out of technical virtuosity. Anything that is "the people's music" like country, rock or soul has to minimize the wankery IMO, though some people can get away with it (like jam bands or bluegrass maybe? You know what you are in for).

Technically proficient but completely devoid of feeling or emotion and not particularly creative. One of the most vapid guitarists in the business considering how much praise he receives. It's like Joe Satriani or Joey Bonamassa - their fingers move really fast but that's about it.
