Couple of good points that I came away with. 1. Recruit your state. 2. Should have capitalized on the Tennessee win this year. hard to get momentum back.
I mostly agree with this but in today's game the portal gives more of a lifeline than what Meyer had available to him. As an example, Norvell didn't really have momentum going into his 3rd season but he used the portal wisely and changed FSU's fortunes and now you see the HS recruiting improving for them.
Maybe I'm overthinking it, but after saying he is a coaches guy, he didn't go out of his way to back BN. If anything, the comment about not capitalizing on the momentum seemed like a head shake at a missed opportunity, and you don't get very many.
I agree. With the portal, it’s recruiting all over again. You have to recruit players in the portal as well as your own players all over again to keep them from transferring. It’s ugly, I hate it. But it’s what the new landscape demands. FSU went out and did that. We need to do the same. Billy is a really likeable guy. Our NIL is behind him. Let’s get aggressive.
Funny how I felt like this was one of his shortcomings here at UF in that his recruiting took too much of a national tone rather than a State of Florida one. He sure didn't make many inroads into S. Fl.
True but for some reason we have never been able to recruit S. Fl. effectively. Meeami makes sense but even FSU has done better than us down there. We will occasionally get a good one but not as a general rule.
How many did FSU win last year with portalpalooza? Then into this year for a recruiting bump. Meanwhile….
I don't know that it was a shortcoming as he got some great out of state players (Harvin/VA, Spikes/NC, Hernandez/CT, Haden/MD, Carl Johnson/NC, Dunlap/SC) but it was part of the new normal that would only become more common for the top teams.
You are right that there have only been pockets of success. When Red Anderson coaching at UF (Hall, Spurrier), he was a great recruiter for us down there. Zook was pretty effective as well.
Agreed, but a national recruiting focus and the beginning of unofficial NIL threw the door wide open to top FL talent leaving the State.
Yes but that isn't really Meyer's fault and the good years under Meyer we probably netted better players from out of state than we lost from in-state. Times change. 1.) There got to be millions and millions of dollars at stake for recruiting services to identify and broadcast who the top prospects were and that showed all the prospects what different options they had. 2.) Many of the top prep programs ceased to be actual high schools and were recruiting nationally themselves. Top WR prospect Carnell Tate from IMG committed to Ohio State is actually from Chicago so in the old days he would have never even been in Florida. But, yes, once Amari Cooper left Miami for a college program that was against passing the ball for 100 years, it was over.
South Florida has great depth but when it comes to star players the mix is pretty random and they come from everywhere. Many of Miami's historically great players weren't from South Florida. Warren Sapp - Apopka Ray Lewis - Lakeland Ed Reed - Louisiana Bryant McKinnie - New Jersey Kellen Winslow - California Jeremy Shockey - Oklahoma Cortez Kennedy - Arkansas Russell Maryland - Chicago All their QB's were from far away, too.
