everything up through a lamb lies down on Broadway is killer. Their 80’s and 90’s stuff might as well be Phil solo albums.
Point of order, sir: Together… Post Gabriel… — Trick of the Tail and — Wind and the Wuthering Post Hackett…
Yes, but I have sort of thought Genesis as three incarnations. The post Hackett years became synth art rock and degraded to pop.
I think you have it right, though the F chord might not necessarily be a dominant chord and the E is (E7 resolving back home). Then it goes to a G - Bmin thing. To the thread, it's interesting to see how quickly this went to nine pages. The music we listen to and esp. that which we grew up listening to can be an important part of our identity. It shows not only in the way folks promote their favored artists, but in the way we become defensive about them (even if playfully so). Personally, I wouldn't indulge any comparison of Beatles/Stones. They are incomparable.
Ha! I think the list sucks, tbh. I mean, the effort is appreciated, but I don't like the list at all. Musical preferences are highly subjective, though.
It just occurred to me, also notably absent of anyone’s mention…..Frank Zappa and The Mothers of Invention.
Idk, it’s a pretty decent list. I don’t think The Byrds, Velvet Underground, or REM belong anywhere near a Top 10, personally. But, I can appreciate most of it. I mean, after @tilly ’s shitty list anything looked pretty good! As I was reading it, I kept waiting for a nod to REO Speedwagon!!
Love the Beatles, but never got much into the Stones, other than enjoying some of their hits. I’d personally put Zeppelin and Hendrix before them, but that’s just my subjective taste. The Beatles though are other worldly for what they gifted us with in such a short time. This new song made me tear up pretty quickly hearing John’s vocals, and the video created so many mixed emotions.
Zappa is weird for me. I absolutely love some of his stuff (Hot Rats & Joe's Garage specifically) but some of it I find unlistenable and pretentious. In fact, this song off Haka/Jawaka is the perfect microcosm of his entire catalog, IMO. 90 seconds of absolute crap at the front and the back with a 2 minute segment in the middle that is some of the most beautiful music ever made.
You'd have to have the kind of personality that would put on Tom Waits or Leonard Cohen at a keg party
Well, if we’re discussing rock music, I think we’re going to have to take “pretentious” off the table of criticism lol. But, yeah I get it. Took me into my late 20’s to appreciate him.
