With a clean pocket I have no doubt Mertz would be carving up defenses. Napier loves play action but that requires running lanes.

    Not exactly rocket science.

I’m not convinced Mertz is anything but barely average on deep balls, but agree 100% he would be/is a terror on screens to 20 yards downfield with good protection.

In person last week, I think he was a little too leery of the outside edge rushers and focused only on his primary read. We can blame it on a variety of factors, but not his greatest game.

He seems a little gun shy also, like he doesn't want to risk picks because of his time at Wisconsin.

I don't know anyone who wouldn't be a little gun shy when a 275LB+ rusher gets through the line and is coming to crush you at full steam multiple times in a 3 hour period. Mertz is fine when he's protected.

Napier needs to tell him we intend insert him in the lineup day one and throw to him 5 times out of every 4 downs (he can figure out how to do that after he signs on with us).

I doubt most kids are really enamored by our offense overall, but I would think top receivers, like Smith, would have to be impressed with how Pearsall and even moreso Trey Wilson have been used recently.

The offense UF has put of on the field the last couple weeks seems a lot more exciting than earlier in the year. 30+ points against Vandy, USC, and Arkansas would seem to be what you want when trying to sell an offense to a WR.

Yeah only thing wrong with our offense is our Oline is not where we want/need it to be. A solid oline fixes a lot of problems with an offense who has real talent at the skill positions(QB,RB,WR,TE). Our scheme IMO is fine, i hear many analysts who review , or call the game who like CBN's scheme (pre snap reads, motions, shifts etc. Always hear them praising it, now the execution of the scheme is a different story but that's getting better too.

Execution and situational play calling need work. I agree. If the talent was better on the line then the offense would look much much better. People say others win without 5 star talent and that's true but our line has been a disaster due to transfers, injury, luck (walker, Goodwin, etc) and lack of athleticism.

We're still digging out of Hevesy's hole. Even before him.

But I have no doubt Napier has shovels working.

Whoa... wait a minute. Can you dig yourself out of a hole???? Seems like when you hit rock bottom, you might want to stop digging... :)

It's an old expression. You dig stairs in the sides of the hole. Takes a bit of thinking.

Please pass this info on to our defense…year after year that digging seems to just make a deeper hole.

I think they will have to get a portal QB, Duffy isn't it and Rodemaker will be a senior. Unless the QB they are signing in Dec is ready to light the world on fire
