I just see them as the same guy pretty much. Good offensive minds that might have been better overall in an era where recruiting wasn't SO important, but probably always going to lack in that CEO quality and drive to recruit. Probably just the nature of a more creative mind vs. a grinder. I still think Mullen would be a good coach in the right situation and a great OC in almost any situation. So, yeah, I think Kiffen's earned a shot, but I wouldn't get my hopes up too high and I wouldn't throw crazy money at him. But, who knows? With NIL and a 12-team playoff, Mullen/Kiffen might be a Jon Gruden type you bring in after a recruiter like Fisher to get the team over the top.
But you also have to readjust since Mullen's 2019 class was considered the worst class in the Power 5 for 1st full cycle. The reason why - nearly a third never saw the field and another third never made an impact.
Just sayin'. They're the same guy. If you think Lane is the bee's knees but Mullen is the worst ever then you probably need to remove your emotions from the evaluation.
Well Kiffin had experiences (pre-Saban rehab) at Tennessee, USC and the Raiders and Mullen had no big-time head coaching experience so again it’s apples to oranges.
I think whoever takes it over will have a ton of talent to work with. Sounds like an Urban Meyer situation.
Well, Mullen had his best lines is his 1st 2 years, all Mac's boys. His starting QBs were all Mac's, Franks and Trask were both Mac's. Even then, he was stubborn enough that he wanted EJ no matter what and it took 2 injuries before Trask got the nod as the starter. Then, it was guaranteed that EJ would have started over AR forcing AR to transfer out. About the only position group Mullen recruited well were the receivers.
Yeah, right? These contracts are so stupid these days. Jimbo can pack his crap today, walk out that door, get on a plane to Tahiti and be set up for life. His kids would be set for life. Unreal
I'd be surprised if Kiffin goes there. The current AD at A&M, Ross Bjork, was the AD at Ole Miss who was largely responsible for the mess Kiffin was hired to clean up. Seems he's done more than his fair share of sustaining a mess at A&M. I don't think Kiffin retires at Ole Miss, but he'll have other options at some point that don't involve working for someone with whom their leadership inadequacies he should be quite familiar.
Jimbo gets $19 million upon getting canned, then another lump sum in the next 120 days, then annual payments of $7m until 2031. But the $77M isn't it. His assistants all have buyouts too and it might end up costing A&M over $100m in buyouts. One thing is for sure, the next coach won't get all that. I expect an aggressive salary but nothing like Jimbo got. Maybe on par with Saban and Kirby.
I wonder if this represents the high water mark of coaching contracts. With NIL, the cult of the conch is going to be less important. The schools have to get is under control. Huge buyouts with no offset need to go the way of the buffalo. As the players become employees in the very near future, I’d much rather be spending $7-10mill a year on players, not coaches hanging out at the beach
kiffin himself is a personality, that is why espn covers him. No cuz it’s Ole Miss. They covered him at Tenn, uSC, Bama OC drama with Saban and even at FAU they gave him pub. Nothing to do with ole miss.
