How’s this: Subway vigilante John Rote cheered, condemned as he's held on $10,000 bail in shooting Rote, a veteran Panavision shipping department employee, was ordered held on $10,000 bail at a Manhattan arraignment, with Judge Jay Weiner ignoring a defense call for his release. Attorney Marie Calvert-Kilbane said he was a 17-year city resident, adding the weapon involved was legally purchased 13 years ago. Roesch was turned loose under court-ordered supervision. NYC’s liberal Justice System is just as bad as the criminals they protect.
thanks. I saw lots of stories about Rote's bail, no mention of the other guy. Obviously, it doesn't make sense to me.
Already mentioned and although anecdotal, in suburban swing districts in Virginia the Republican candidates focused on crime (one particularly humorous ad featured a bad actor playing the part of a criminal saying that he was supporting the Democratic candidate) while the Democratic candidates focused on abortion and whether accurate or not the Democratic ads also referred to the Republicans as MAGA supporters. The Democrats ending up holding their majority in the Senate and flipping the House of Delegates much to the chagrin of Governor Glenn Youngkin who hoping that a solid Republican legislature would bolt him to national prominence as a more moderate alternative to Trump.
If the guy who fired the warning shot is arrested, but not the mugger, that is not the prioritization of law enforcement you should want. If it is, by all means move to that cesspool, just stay the heck away from Florida.
The criminal justice system in New York City lacks common sense. It is as simple as that. It’s tunnel vision at its worst. My son has lived in New York City for the last three years and is moving to Nashville next month. It has gotten out of hand.
No, but they're also not a fan of arresting Good Samaritans for defending themselves and others while letting muggers and thieves go.
I'm assuming that the difference is that one defendant used a firearm while the other attempted extortion. Although the crime with which Rote was charged was essentially a form of negligence the shot still had the potential to hit a bystander. I would agree that he probably should have been released on his own recognizance given the low probability that he would attempt to flea.
we will see. If you tie crime and immigration together under the rubric of safety, IMO that will Trump abortion on a National election. And even if it’s close, the overwhelming majority of Americans are against DEI so that is going to be the extra push to get people to the polls and ignore abortion if they are forced to choose.
the mugger was arrested and released. The good Samaritan was arrested and jailed until he posted a $10,000 bond. Now let’s see what happens when it comes time to prosecute. If I was a betting man, I’d put some good cash on the fact that the criminal will not be prosecuted, but the good Samaritan will be prosecuted.
this is where prosecutorial discretion comes in to play. It will not be used here. The good Samaritan will have a GoFundMe page started, and I would be surprised if it doesn’t reach a half million dollars before the end of the month. He will have attorneys lining up to defend him to try to make a name for themselves. I would demand to jury if I was representing him. And one of the questions I would ask the jury is “what exactly is the state suggesting my client should have done? Walk away? Attack the attacker? Sing a song?” is it wise to fire a gun in a subway waiting area? Absolutely not. Did he fire his gun safely? Apparently so because nobody was injured. Did firing a warning shot save the life of the mugger? Probably so. Had the good Samaritan shot the mugger and killed him, would he be prosecuted for murder? You bet your ass he would be, in New York,
why do you think only Republicans can use this plan? Lol. Do you think all of the Democrats are idiots like they are in New York? That may be the company you keep, but I don’t think the majority of Democrats feel that way. A lot of Democrats are getting primaried. This would be a good position to take against some of these Uber liberal/socialist Democrats that are ruining our country. We need more Joe Manchins and less squad members.
Men care very deeply about the women in their lives...their wives, their sisters, etc., and therefore, they care very deeply about abortion. I don't think many men like the idea that a woman they love who had a miscarriage may have to lay in the hospital until near death to receive what had been very standard medical treatment. And of course, given Clarence Thomas' words in his concurrence with the Dobbs decision, in addition to much commentary from Republican office holders and conservative commentators nationwide, it is clear that contraceptives are next on the conservative bandwagon that seeks to end religious freedom nationwide. The same logic employed in the Dobbs decision could very easily be applied to contraceptives. Guess what? Men like sex! A lack of access to contraceptives would certainly lead to much less sex for men, and like I wrote above, that issue is forever intertwined with abortion rights. Therefore, this set of circumstances will affect the votes of men almost to the same degree and in the same way as it will with women. And most people will not believe the people who have continually lied to them over the years who are now going to try to get them to believe that if you do not take away these radically conservative legislatures' abilities to ban abortion, they will not go the extreme route, and will only limit abortions at 15 weeks. And most will also not believe that a radical Supreme Court will not end access to contraceptives. You certainly cannot trust the justices who lied to Congress when their surrogates tell you not to worry so much about contraceptives being banned....yeah right!! Edited to add...I mean...heck...GOP legislators in Ohio are already talking about methods they will use to undo the vote for the constitutional amendment approved this week! They continually show that they do not believe in democracy! How dare they? The people just voted for it!
Just a guess I'm predicting he will probably be allowed to plead out and end up with a fine and/or a number of hours of community service. No trial and no jail time.
Oh, can you point out these big primary contests that are on-going with specific examples of competitive primary campaigns against incumbent Democratic officials?
Although I’m against abortion without exceptions I’m 100% for birth control. Both sides need to meet somewhere in the middle. Won’t happen from what I read and hear people say.
Sure, I guess I forgot that you may too busy making signs and protesting to watch the news or to take the 3.5 seconds on Google looking it up. My bad. https://www.axios.com/2023/11/05/squad-primary-challenges-israel-palestine# Anti-Israel 'Squad' members Ilhan Omar, Cori Bush face challenge Do you need more examples sweetheart, or is this enough for ya?
