Most experts think it's not the magma chamber but degassing (we've all been there), which itself can cause eruptions but not nearly the catastrophic eruptions that an increase in the magma chamber would. In the event of a supercaldera eruption, those 3M people near ground zero are not the issue. They are gone. We will need to worry the billion people around them in the rest of Europe, Asia Minor, and North Africa who will starve in the unending night and unbreathable outdoor air filled with microscopic volcanic glass. We still do not know the cause of the Bronze Age Collapse, but one possibility is such an eruption in Europe that caused a humanitarian disaster that overwhelmed the Mediterranean civilizations as armed refugees poured into them. But there’s also not damned thing we could do to prevent it, so football it is.
Absolutely and consistent with my understanding. But there could be less than full eruptions in which the locals would be at risk and others would not.
