I doubt they consider this but would be interesting if we were to get injured in the future and petition for a 6th year if the ncaa would factor this is in? Would be bad pr but since when do they care about that.

Don't scholarships have requirements for the recipient? I say make it the norm: Fulfill your end of the scholarship deal or lose it. Otherwise, we might see this become the norm. Imagine your starting QB saying "Ehh . . . I'm good. Just gonna sit back now" this w/o acknowledging that coach Slime from SlimeU offered a sweeter deal for next year.

The requirements are to stay in good academic standing and not get in trouble. Every kid is allowed a redshirt year by NCAA rules. When it is taken, I do.not know who decides but there has to be some discussion between the coaches and player I would believe.

This has happened before. King, the starting QB at Houston did this then eventually transferred to Miami.

I expect Morris to transfer. I don't see how this isn't a distraction for the team.

But I also feel a player should have say if/when to redshirt.

It just seems there is more going on behind the scenes that we are not privy to.

No, Doeren was not for this. Leary is not there and has nothing to do with this. No, there is nothing going on behind the scenes or in the locker room that warranted this. Every QB wants to play, every QB wants to start, early if possible, he was doing all of that, he was the guy. The QB is also a de facto leader. In the middle of the season he decided to quit on his team, period. He didn’t get any garbage reps either. He didn’t play at all until game 6, as the starter. The plan going into the season was for him to redshirt and learn the offense more behind Armstrong who was very familiar with it, having played for the new OC when he was at Virginia. That didn’t go so well, coach asked him if he wanted to play now, Morris said yes. But was he fully invested?? Yeah, I would say he’s a distraction now, by his own doing.

Well there you have it. I will add that you left out the part where after they asked him if he wanted to veer away from the original plan and play because they needed him and that he advised the coach after a game or 2 that he is still thinking about preserving his RS and wanted to be upfront and honest about that to the coach.

So its not like he sprung this on them out of nowhere. Not that I'm a fan but maybe the kid wanted to keep to the plan of red shirting while playing a little and getting a little more experience like the article said. Hard to blame him for staying the course Agreed to. And it's not like the starter is injured and can't play, he just was not impressive while playing. I would probably feel different if they had no viable QB due to injury and he left them hanging.

Slime U is actually the official moniker for FSU/GA/Miami/BAMA/TN. Phonetically speaking, that is. :D

    Do schools have to
the king situation was a little different though right? Iirc they started out like 1-3 with a ton of injuries and it was holgorsens bright idea to not waste his last year and it blew up in his face when king left after the season

Yeah, this is a symptom of Round 1 of a multi-round, thoroughly major league S__tshow known as major college football. Round 2 is going to be mainly about dinging them, via shoving them WAY back in the pack due to having a soft psyche in a VERY tough sport. That also includes cutting them. Round 3 is going to be mainly about the players unionizing. Rounds 4+ is going to be about the fans and what they think about the product.

You're wrong in 2023, in fact it's the cool thing to do. Everything is all about 'me' for the younger generation.

I'll never understand forcing a redshirt in modern college football.

How many guys in modern college football involve a situation where a 5th year is the year that catapults them from undrafted to draft pick? There are probably exceptions to the rule (as there always is), but you can typically tell who the dudes are pretty early and it's just a matter of how much they develop. A potential 5th year is generally icing on the cake, not really something that makes or breaks you unless you were a walk-on or a borderline scholarship player or something to that degree.

If you're the starter in a good season, forcing a redshirt makes zero sense to me. It's more something that teams should take advantage of if the opportunity organically presents itself.

EDIT: Most logical scenario I see for "forcing" a redshirt is a player sees the writing on the wall, they are not the future starter of that team, intend to transfer no matter what, and don't see playing out the remainder of the year as beneficial. I still think that's probably a mistake, but it's not my life.
