Nov 7 Election: Abortion vs everything else

Abortion is pretty overwhelming in support-of among the electorate. But in red states where the pols *only* have to worry about primary voters, that’s where you see them push extremist policy. This mostly cuts across the Deep South, but you see them trying in Midwest and FL too.

It’s the same deal on gun reform. Some of the measures poll even more crazily, like 87% in support-of, but GOP pols don’t care because there is no penalty for them blocking it (in fact they continually get rewarded by NRA).

Odd that the abortion issue seems to matter more electorally, even though the poll numbers aren’t as overwhelming as some of the gun reform issues. But I guess it really gets the women voters angrier to have to deal with that crap.

 

Not to be insulting but I don’t care what your opinion is and why should your opinion count in a decision being made by a woman and her medical provider. I also don’t think my opinion matters either but the difference is you think your belief is more important than a woman’s or a medical professional.

 

Abortion, like any other medical procedure, should be between the patient and doctor. Politicians choosing an arbitrary fetal age and interfering between a woman, family, and doctor is the issue and where Rs have lost the battle. For example, a woman who discovers she is carrying a non-viable fetus beyond a politician-defined limit, should have a discussion with her Ob/Gyn to make a decision on aborting. Instead, too many examples of women being forced to carry to term and watch the child die in her arms. Cruel. And the dark side to criminalizing physicians is creating maternity care deserts, increasing infant mortality.

He also supported Lousiana’s abortion ban.

Most Republican politicians support a near total ban. rape and incest based anbortiins are generally rare.

The problem with 6 weeks is it is effectively a near total ban. The six week clock starts at the beginning of the cycle, weeks befire the act of conception. The earliest a woman could know she was pregnant is at 4 weeks, when a period is missed. That would give you all of two weeks to have the abortion. Given that periods can be inconsistent it may not be obvious at all until it is too late.

Also, if it is at 6 weeks, which is really 2 weeks, the number of abortions would be very small, plus abortion clinics would have the burden of figuring out if they were in the two week window otherwise they could be subject to civil or criminal penalties. So basically abortion clinics just shut down. Which is what most anti abortioners want.

You may be right about 12-24 weeks. Red states may support in the earlier side of that window but purple states like VA clearly weren’t plussed by the 15 week proposal.

I think there could be a good faith effort to come up with something but I don’t think there is good faith out there. Those on the right are dead set on getting their way whatever the cost. Those on the left don’t want to give and inch because of “slippery slope”. Those on the left on abortion are the same as those on the right are with guns. They feel any concession will lead to a total ban.

In Europe many countries have a limit around 13 weeks, but they have fairly liberal exceptions that are determined by doctors, not by politicians, law enforcement and lawyers.

Republican Ed Romaine defeated Democrat Dave Calone on Tuesday to become the first Republican to win the Suffolk County executive position in 20 years.

Romaine won with 56% of the vote by a margin of 26,000 votes, The Associated Press projected.

I agree, that is why I have always thought you need to have exceptions and I think practically all R's feel the same way. Where we must differ is that at some point in the womb, up for discussion when, the child should have some rights and not be subjected to killing it.

 

It takes 60 votes, he and all of know it will never happen. Can you not admire a person who is voicing their convictions, even though they know it will never happen?

This man will be glad to decide for American women what their "choice" will be if we can't park this dead horse and tackle higher priorities.

 

His opinion may not matter, but you conveniently neglected (as always) to even recognize that there is a nother human life with some skin in the game.

Just no voice. Not yet anyway.
