NC State's sophomore QB has stepped in and gone 3-1 starting the last four games. His dad announced that he will not play anymore this year, opting to take his redshirt. I tend to side with the players in most situations, but definitely not this one. Wow

NC State QB Morris out for year, opts to redshirt

But why? He's not exactly projected a top pick or anything.

Apparently, State signed a transfer last spring making it obvious that Morris isn't their plan for the future. Still, quitting on your team is not a good look.

His diddy announced, says it all.
He was 3-1 as a starter including wins over Clemson & Miami. NC State still has 3 regular season games remaining including their biggest rival in UNC and a likely bowl game. This is chicken excrement!

If you are talking about Brennan Armstrong, he isn't their future. He was the starter this year, wasn't very good and got benched. This is also his last year of college football as he has no eligibility left. I have no idea why Morris did this unless he was told that they would be going back to Armstrong (the NC St offense has not been good despite Morris going 3-1).

Wow! Something very strange is going on there.

Eddie Morris told WRAL-TV of the decision on Tuesday. He said his son, a sophomore, had plenty of options had he decided to transfer but would have done that already if that was his desire.

I'd take bets right now that he will announce entering the portal the second the season is over, if not before. However, I wonder who would take someone that quit on his team like this?

These kids often get BAD advice, IMO.

I had a client who was training for the combine and draft a few years ago. He was a guard for NC State. He said the coach, Doeren, was douche and not well liked by the players. That his TV interview persona was opposite in the locker room.

An interesting move. Morris is a true sophomore. by redshirting, that will give him 3 more years.
Armstrong is a graduate transfer and there are 3 other QBs on the roster. 1 RS freshman and 2 freshmen that will likely redshirt.
There is one QB committed for 2024.

Two thoughts: 1) Aren't RS decisions usually more up to the coaches than the players? 2) If a player pulls this kind of move, the Univ should be able to yank their scholarship, charge for the semester's tuition, and cancel meal plans/tutoring/medical/any additional ongoing resources provided to scholarship players.

Rumor around here is that Auburn is involved. I am skeptical. Don't think he's that good.

This. Armstrong is out of eligibility after this season, and the decision has left lots of folks there confused. IIRC Armstrong played the last 1.5 drives for NC State against Miami last Saturday, so maybe they did plan on going back to Armstrong as the starter which led Morris to do this.

Color him gone. Redshirting this season makes him more attractive to other teams for NIL packages. Sad times for college football.

    A little backstory.
Morris had his RS burned as a freshman before going down to injury. Without the injury, he would have finished the season as the starter.
Sophomore year the coach brings in at best a mediocre QB(avg career stats from UVA) and Morris gets garbage reps.
Armstrong stinks it up and Morris is put back in the same as his freshman yr.
One more game would burn his RS again.

None of us know what he is being told in the locker room that may effect his future.

I wouldn't rush to conclusion to fast here. I could see a situation where this was all worked out with the coach to do this. The coach may have realized he had himself a real player here and didn't want to waste a year of eligibility on half of a already wasted season. I mean how else could the father determine he's tedshirting but will still be a NC state wolfpack next year when that's not really his decision. It may not have gone that way but we probably shouldn't be slandering the kid by calling him a quitter if it was a collective decision with the coach involved. If you think about it, it would benefit the coach too if he started next year from game one with out losing his 1st qtr of the season games.

NC State isnt in a "wasted" season though. They have a real solid shot at a 10 win season and are 3 points away (lost to #11 team by 3) from being in the mix for the conference championship game.

Just throwing this out there. If Leary didn't get injured and transfer ( went to Kentucky) Morris would have gotten his RS last year and been Leary's back up this year.

They were also just 3 points away from losing to a 2 win Virginia team and currently sit at 7th in the conference behind 2 of the teams they've already lost to , Louisville and Duke and still have to play UNC who is ranked above them. Wasted season may not have been the right word unless you're looking at it as having a chance to play like Morris has played starting next year in game 1. In CFB if you drop 3 games early it can definitely put a damper on your season goals, More so if one of the conference members are undefeated and currently pegged to be in the playoffs. That leaves one spot available in the conference game and NC State would need A LOT to happen outside of their control to make it.

I'm just saying , that it's quite possible that Coach Doeren was involved in this decision.
