DOJ announces arrests in ‘high-end brothel network’ used by elected officials, military officers and others | CNN Politics

Three individuals have been arrested on charges of operating a “high-end brothel network” in Massachusetts and Virginia with a clientele that included elected officials, military officers and government contractors with security clearances, the Justice Department announced Wednesday.

    ***

He added: “They are doctors, they are lawyers, they are accountants, they are elected officials, they are executives of high tech companies and pharmaceutical companies, they are military officers, government contractors, professors, scientists. They are the men who fuel this commercial sex ring.”

“There are potentially hundreds of individuals who took these services as commercial sex buyers,” Levy said, noting the investigation is still in its early stages.

For my part, I don't think prostitution between consenting adults should be a criminal issue. Having said that, there are obviously ethical and national security concerns at least when it comes to certain folks in government based upon the potential for blackmail/extortion schemes.

Correct. How many of the ladies were Chinese, Vietnamese and Russian? As for ethics, well, the US has left ethics in the rear-view mirror decades ago.

I believe the U.S. military still prohibits members from committing adultery, for example, even if the service member is unmarried. I'm sure there must be a prohibition against prostitution as well. Not sure how strictly or how often those things are enforced, but I definitely understand them.

I agree with this in general but recognize a distinction between what is described here and the drug addicted - on the street or in Craig’s list prostitute who is not in control of her own body and may well be trafficked but I don’t know how both of those scenarios can be covered by the same law.

I think legalized prostitution puts the cracked out craigslist streetwalkers out of business. They don’t exist in the Netherlands.

It should be 100% legal. Crazy to me that it’s not. Meanwhile it’s perfectly legal to cheat on your spouse.

Fair point, and I think that goes to whether it's in fact consensual. I'm sure there are grey areas, particularly when mental illness or drug addiction are involved.

Pull back the sheet of cardboard and expose the cockroaches, regardless of what their affilations may be. Still waiting for that list of Epstein peeps to be made public as I don't give a rip if they are D or R (likely some of both).

Not all the “consenting” adults are entirely free in these sex rings. You take some woman from Vietnam, Ukraine, Russia, Colombia… whatever… and there is a possibility they are being held essentially as slaves. Of course making it a crime (as opposed to legal but regulated) probably just makes those conditions worse, because it drives it all into the underground. It’s just another area where govt tries to be “moral”, but in so doing makes things worse. Not unlike the war on drugs or abortion.

Yeah, if someone is being held as a slave, that's definitely not consensual. I can also imagine some more difficult grey areas.

Precedent in the Navy at high levels. Graft, but could and may well have been used by enemies

The Fat Leonard scandal is an ongoing investigation and prosecution of corruption within the United States Navy during the 2000s and 2010s. It has involved ship support contractor Glenn Defense Marine Asia (GDMA), a Thai subsidiary of the Glenn Marine Group.[1][2] The Washington Post called the scandal "perhaps the worst national-security breach of its kind to hit the Navy since the end of the Cold War."[2] The company's chief executive, president, and chairman, Malaysian national Leonard Glenn Francis ("Fat Leonard")[2] bribed a large number of uniformed officers of the United States Seventh Fleet with at least a half million dollars in cash, plus travel expenses, luxury items, parties and prostitutes, in return for classified material about the movements of U.S. ships and submarines, confidential contracting information, and information about active law enforcement investigations into Glenn Defense Marine Asia.[2][3] Francis then "exploited the intelligence for illicit profit, brazenly ordering his moles to redirect aircraft carriers, ships and subs to ports he controlled in Southeast Asia so he could more easily bilk the Navy for fuel, tugboats, barges, food, water and sewage removal."[2] The Navy, through GDMA, even employed divers to search harbors for explosives.[3] He also directed them to author "Bravo Zulu" memos, which is an informal term for a letter of commendation from the Navy given to civilians who have performed outstanding services for the Navy, in order to bolster GDMA's credibility for jobs "well done".[4]

How can the service member commit adultery if they are unmarried? Unless maybe the hooker is hooked up?

Could be wrong and maybe there's a different term, but I think it counts when a service member who's not married has sex with someone who is married.

Well as long as one of them is married then it is adultery. If not, then they call it fraternization but both peeps would have to be in the service together. Or something like that.

    Brothel, meh, could care less.

Compromised officials being cultivated, big deal. Are the hookers Russian, Chinese, Ukrainian or Israeli? ;)
