Trump and allies plot revenge, Justice Department control in a second term

Advisers have also discussed deploying the military to quell potential unrest on Inauguration Day. Critics have called the ideas under consideration dangerous and unconstitutional.

By Isaac Arnsdorf, Josh Dawsey and Devlin Barrett

Donald Trump and his allies have begun mapping out specific plans for using the federal government to punish critics and opponents should he win a second term, with the former president naming individuals he wants to investigate or prosecute and his associates drafting plans to potentially invoke the Insurrection Act on his first day in office to allow him to deploy the military against civil demonstrations.

In private, Trump has told advisers and friends in recent months that he wants the Justice Department to investigate onetime officials and allies who have become critical of his time in office, including his former chief of staff, John F. Kelly, and former attorney general William P. Barr, as well as his ex-attorney Ty Cobb and former Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman Gen. Mark A. Milley, according to people who have talked to him, who, like others, spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe private conversations. Trump has also talked of prosecuting officials at the FBI and Justice Department, a person familiar with the matter said.

Much of the planning for a second term has been unofficially outsourced to a partnership of right-wing think tanks in Washington. Dubbed “Project 2025,” the group is developing a plan, to include draft executive orders, that would deploy the military domestically under the Insurrection Act, according to a person involved in those conversations and internal communications reviewed by The Washington Post. The law, last updated in 1871, authorizes the president to deploy the military for domestic law enforcement.

The proposal was identified in internal discussions as an immediate priority, the communications showed. In the final year of his presidency, some of Trump’s supporters urged him to invoke the Insurrection Act to put down unrest after the murder of George Floyd in the summer of 2020, but he never did it. Trump has publicly expressed regret about not deploying more federal force and said he would not hesitate to do so in the future.

If Trump wins the presidency, democracy and America as we have known it are finished. He has CLEARLY revealed his Neofascist philosophy and plans both by his words and by his actions. It is obvious to anybody who believes his or her eyes and ears. His attempted coup in 2020 is enough to put him in that category. These plans add to the toll.

If you vote for this man, then you are voting for the Russian/Hungarian model of government. That is a fact. Take what Trump does and says at face value. Trump is going to emulate Putin, and you know it! Don't lie to yourself in an attempt to justify voting for this Neofascist. Can a person vote for someone for president who has clearly shown himself to be a Neofascist and not BE a Neofascist? By definition, the answer is NO!

I don't think a lot of his supporters are lying to themselves at all. They aren't that stupid. They're just sick and tired of democracy. Trump to them is just what the doctor ordered.

The neo-fascists who have and are actively deploying the criminal justice apparatus to shut down their political opponent want everyone to fear the object of their efforts doing the same to them...

Trump's crimes (the ones we know about) have been committed right out in the open. That some people see the prosecution for his criminality as just political persecution is mind-boggling.

Democracy was useful until it wasn’t

It’s giving too much power to women and minorities for their liking..

Social order must return to its rightful place

Ditto Clonton and Biden. Except that the authorities ran and run cover for them bc they are approved by them.

...bc that's how democracy works, right?

The GOP decided to give a lifelong criminal a pass and nominate him for the presidency in 2016. Just because they issued this pass, it doesn't mean that the rest of the country has to also give it a stamp of approval.

This is why traditionally political parties didn't promote political candidates that were crooks if they knew about it ahead of time.

I think it is the 100 or more Republican witnesses spread out over 4 indictments, most of whom worked for Trump and some that actually served in his administration by his side that counts. Your petty attempt to downplay a very serious situation and crime accusations (with multiple Republican witnesses & DOJ/State investigation evidence) is noted, though.

Seriously, just how anti Law and Order and anti-Constitution are you?

How is a state civil trial for fraud shutting down a political opponent? How is a red state's criminal trial for election interference shutting down a political opponent? The only federal prosecution is the open and shut case of Trump literally purposefully hiding and lying about top secret nuke documents. Im not sure why that brazen crime doesnt bother right wingers but Pence having a document in his office isnt the same as hoarding top secret documents and moving them around to keep them from being found.

it is not a red state which is prosecuting Trump, it’s a wacky, leftist activist, prosecuting Trump in the most liberal county in the south. If you can’t see the difference, take your head out of your bum

I was responding to the accusation that someone was shutting down their political opponent. No one in Georgia state or local government is part of the federal government being directed by Trump's political opponent. It fantasy hogwash... much like everything you post. Notice how my question went unanswered?
