yeah as others have mentioned coach White can bring in talent, his problem has always been figuring out how to coach that talent to consistent success.
Mike White is a kinder, gentler, basketball version of Mus-take. You can not say anything about what he can sign, but his blind spot on his abilities is damning. I don't foresee him getting any better at it.
one of those 5 stars was born in Athens, and his brother is a walk on. Probably not that hard to get that kid there. Wilkins son is also from state of GA. Mike White would have be an imbecile to screw that up.
Kids also realize the style he plays never maximizes their talents. Slow predictable basketball isn’t what kids want.
Quite frankly, his missteps with Nembhard is quite damning. Not that we could have been Gonzaga, just that his skills are now in the NBA. And he did not "blossom" after he left, he just got better at what he does.
He was good at collecting pieces of talent. He just never assembled the type team I thought we’d consistently see under his tenure. Good guy; tried hard; had some moments… just didn’t work out. I keep in touch with him a bit and root for his personal success… which is hard to do, considering his venue. Lol!
I look at this as a win. This is two 5*s that aren't playing for UK or Bama, or someone else. Until he proves he can do something with it, I hope he hauls in some talent every year.
Honestly, I don’t think most of us ever thought recruiting talent was his issue. It was style of play, how he used the talent he had, how he mixed and matched talent and didn’t seem to have a clear philosophy on what he wanted in players, and his crazy lack of in game adjustments. And then the massive off season turnover we seemed to have every year that had us starting over every fall. Jmo.
Like things involving Dan Mullen in Swamp Gas, we'll put discussions of Mike White in this one thread so we don't have numerous new threads for a former coach every time something happens involving him. Thanks!
If anyone is interested their game against Oregon on the 6th is on TruTV at 4:30 EST. It may be the first game on a major cable network.
Isn’t Newell in our backyard or at least playing high school ball in Florida? We should have closed Newell.
Oregon wins 82-71. Not sure how good either team is forecasted to be but not what I would consider an easy 1st game of the season for either team.
