The reason I believe one of the main reasons he left was because Foley didn’t support him is because it’s true and confirmed to my parents from one of the most prominent Bull Gators who was very close to Steve and Jerry. Was I there when Steve said it? No. But this man had major integrity and would never lie or even exaggerate about something like this. For those who don’t believe I think don’t want to believe it - for whatever reason.

Lol. There seems to be a healthy amount of Dabo hate on this board, but I guess I was wrong about that.

Not questioning anyone's integrity. I certainly agree that Foley's lack of support was certainly irritating, but I can't believe he was so thin-skinned to allow him to leave primarily due to this. SOS was not petty, at least AFAIK...

I've always wondered what was Foley supposed to have done? it was a dirty scum bag play but so were the Kentucky guys intentionally injuring Franks and trying to do the same to Trask. It's not like we can get these guys arrested.

I have much more respect for Dabo. He told it like it needed to be conveyed. You can't argue with results. And he will be back. It will be harder than ever because there are so many components that are now in place including the inevitable shakeup of the ACC Conference.

I don't think Spurrier had to be petty to use that issue to be the final push to finally try his hand in the NFL. He is an ultra competitor and he wanted to see if his system could work in the NFL. 2001 was particularly tough on spurrier who always valued SEC titles as much as anything. Winning an SEC often meant being in contention for a natty anyway. Instead, he had one of the most prolific offensive years end up with NO SEC title, no SEC east title and a QB get snubbed from a Heisman. Add the lack of support especially against the very public and disrespectful admonishing by the FSU AD then yes...I could see Spurrier using it as the final straw to move on.

He rightfully deserved to put that caller in their place...at some point SOS was saying similar things prior to his departure..

Yeah Spurrier put himself on a limb, the sniveling FSU AD admonished him, and crickets from Foley or UF admin. While I get Foley wanting to stay above the fray his lack of response was not the correct move. I am sure that didn’t sit well with Spurrier.

Also like you said it was his most productive offense and things didn’t pan out. LSU ended up winning the SEC and UF motor boated LSU early in the season. If we win that TN game we are likely playing for the national championship.

In a way he was though - remember when Curry let him go? He always wanted to crush him and would say how bad it hurt when he was released.

I am going to go contrary to just about all the takes here, even though I don't have a stinking clue. IMO, WHEN you are getting WAAAAAAAAAAAY more money than the folks who you are beholden, if you think you are insulated from their frustrations well then.........if you don't like the heat then get the H__L out of the kitchen.

It is mainly different in the NFL. Who you are beholden is primarily the billionaire owner who thinks VERY highly of his skills. Secondarily, you are beholden to the President/GM, who acts as a proxy to the owner. Yes, the fans are a part of it all, but when you have an owner at their level and the insane amounts of money from TV and now gambling, fans' ire is WAY in the back. That is NOT the way it is in major college football. Does anyone think Bill Belichick will have an "apology tour" in the early summer because he is beholden to the fans? How about Swinney? DAMN RIGHT he will, or else he won't have a job next year. Now Jimbo is likely going to mail it in during his rubber chicken tourfest. He has guaranteed money and he just doesn't care.

Yes, there are limits on how much a basic fan can exact by pushing your buttons - family is WAY out-of-bounds - but if you are beholden to call-in shows and whatnot, get the H__L out of the kitchen if you have thin skin, take your money and retire, or get a job at South Carolina A&T School for Geeks.

Sorry guys and gals, he was more out-of-bounds than inbounds. You may not like the lay of the land today, but it IS real. It is what it is.

The key difference is the NFL is built for parity. The system is built so that every team has a chance and it is really hard to maintain a good team. Good teams get the lowest draft picks and with a salary cap, you can only retain so many good players once their rookie contracts run out. Every great coach loses.

College football is built for dominance. The system is built for good teams to stay good teams. So if Swinney was at one time dominating but now he's not, that's a him problem.

This is all as I’ve heard it too. That was the catalyst for the move. But all the accounts here regarding Spurrier’s stated dissatisfaction with our fans are accurate too. It may not have been his primary reason for jumping ship when he did, but it factored into his declining passion for the job and made it easier for him to walk away. He essentially said so publicly. And yes, years later he said he regretted leaving.

I think fans are the same all over though, especially in ones that have expectations of possible national championships. It’s no different than Dabo getting sick of listening to that Van the other day, it’s all the same.

Watching Shane Matthew's podcast yesterday with Buddy Martin, and he repeatedly said one of the stronger reasons SOS left was the entitled nature of the UF fan base, Shane citing the attitude of that knucklehead caller, that Dabo took issue with, as an example of what SOS had to contend with.

I think Shane knows more about it than the average entitled poster.

The same entitled fans that SoS now wouldn’t mind frequenting his restaurant?

C’mon now, he was way too alpha to be bothered about what the heck fans thought. I think it’s a PC excuse so people won’t get wrapped up over the real reasons (money, ambition, friction with AD, boredom)

Dabo is finding out what adversity is all about as a coach with fans that are unrealistic about staying on top of the football world... :D;)
