They probably could have gotten the “more nuanced” aspects of their letter a bit more attention if they hadn’t decided to emphasize, in bold, the assertion that Israel and western governments are responsible for the deaths of Israeli citizens. It’s fairly easy to dismiss your grievance letter as excusing or justifying acts of terrorism when that’s what it expressly does.
It was going to be fairly easy for the same people to dismiss it no matter what, no matter how carefully they picked their language. Just like anyone who said anything lightly critical about American foreign policy in late 2001 was "the blame America first crowd."

I think that attending UF we saw much less of this because we have such a large Jewish student population. At one point I think UF had the largest Jewish college student population in the county. I don't think anyone was able to graduate without having multiple friends and acquaintances who were Jewish, of varying levels of faithfulness. Harder to be antisemitic when you actually know Jewish people. The cure for any kind of bigotry is getting to know people better, and at UF that kind of comes with the territory.
