You seem apologetic of Deion in several posts. Do you think he will be a good coach? Will he be coaching in 5 years?
I wouldn’t characterize anything I said as apologetic of Deion Sanders. As far as whether I think he will be a good coach… I think he is a good coach, already.
In fairness, @murphree_hall has been posting in NBN regularly for years without any problems I can recall.
I would say Deion is an average coach who has ridden off his son's coattails. Shedeur is the real deal and a first round pick. Deion has only coached with Shedeur as his college QB. Seems awfully convenient.
Colorado was 1-11 last year and is 4-4 this year with a win over TCU. He was very good a Jackson State, also. 2020: Jackson State (4-3, 3-2 SWAC) 2021: Jackson State (11-2, 8-0 SWAC) 2022: Jackson State (12-1, 8-0 SWAC)
Could he actually call him a clown if that’s what he thought. Nope, not today, can’t be ruffling feathers.
He did win at a second tier school with nfl players. He has his work cut out for him and seems that he will get the talent to compete with. It’s crazy though that 4-4 creates such a stir.
Nobody thought those were NFL players until he brought them to Colorado. If he had stayed at Jackson State, they'd probably not even get drafted. What's the point of that statement? They may have played against NFL talent in the SWAC that isn't getting recognized.
Sanders has brought improvement to the Buffs, no question about it, but it isn't extraordinary unless he runs the table. Looking at his schedule, I see Colorado finishing 6-6. Let's look at some other examples: Baylor (2017-18): 1-11 to 7-6 (Matt Ruhle) Arizona (2021-2): 1-11 to 5-7 (Jedd Fisch) Boston College (2012-13): 2-10 to 7-6 (Steve Addazio) California (2013-14): 1-11 to 5-7 (Sonny Dykes) Duke (2021-2): 3-9 to 9-4 (Mike Elko) Florida (1979-80): 0-10-1 to 8-4 (Charley Pell both years) Georgia Tech (94-95): 1-10 to 6-5 (George O'Leary) Illinois (2006-7): 2-10 to 9-4 (Ron Zook both years) Kansas (2021-22): 2-10 to 6-7 (Lance Leipold) Kansas St (88-89): 1-10 to 5-6 (Bill Snyder) Kentucky (13-14): 2-10 to 5-7 (Mark Stoops) Kentucky (82-3): 0-10-1 to 8-3-1 (Jerry Claiborne) North Carolina (89-90): 2-10 to 6-6 (Mack Brown) Ole Miss (2011-12): 2-10 to 7-6 (Hugh Freeze) Oregon State (18-19): 2-10 to 5-7 (Jonathan Smith) Pitt (72-73): 1-10 to 6-5-1 (Johnny Majors) Rutgers (02-03): 1-11 to 5-7 (Greg Schiano) South Carolina (1999-2000): 0-11 to 8-4 (Lou Holtz both years) Stanford (83-84): 1-10 to 5-7 (Jack Elway) Syracuse (20-21): 1-10 to 5-7 (Dino Babers) Vandy (10-11): 2-10 to 6-7 (James Franklin) Virginia (16-17): 2-10 to 6-7 (Bronco Mendenhall) Washington (08-09): 0-12 to 5-7 (Steve Sarkisian) There are many other similar examples out there. What irritates the fans is the media circus, because everyone in the media loves flamboyance...
It was an interesting story, hence media coverage. This is Basic Media Operations 101. What annoys me is the impossible standard you are setting for him. Going from 1-11 to 6-6 in one year is pretty good, IMO. If Billy Napier had won 5 more games than the previous year under Mullen, we’d have thrown him a parade and renamed Ben Hill Griffin after him.
LOL!! Florida wasn't 1-11 in Mullen's last year. If Billy won five more games than Dan, We would have gone 11-1, and he would have DESERVED a parade. He took Mullen's 6-7 (his worst of four years) and went 6-7. Understandable, of course, and yes, with the flux of this season, another 6-7 season could very well happen. Most of us reasonable Gators understand that as well. I don't expect a 10+ win season next year, but it would be nice if he could rise to Zook's 2003 level in 2024, finishing 8-5. I still think we haven't mastered The Portal and the NIL. If/when we do, I think that will take us to a couple higher levels than we are at this time...
Sanders is learning, the hard way, that to compete at a high D1 level, you need depth. Colorado just doesn't quite yet have enough players with D1 talent to compete week in and week out playing a P5 conference schedule. I also agree the turnaround isn't spectacular. It's very good, but as the list above shows, nothing that hasn't been done before. Had Colorado and Sanders kept on winning like they did early, different story. But as is, finding two more wins and making a bowl game, while not impossible, is an uphill climb for them in my opinion. The difference is the hype. Anyone hear about Arizona this year? Third year of Jedd Fisch, went 1-11, 5-7, and is now 5-3 with two OT losses and a third by a TD against undefeated Washington. And playing with a RS Freshman QB who took over when the starter got hurt and hasn't looked back. And remember the name Tetairoa McMillan, a sophomore WR who, if he stays healthy, could be special. Lead all true freshmen in receiving yards last year, and having an even better year this year. As for Sanders, the interesting question will be can he develop players? Or, will he need to continue to replenish his roster with transfers every year? While the portal makes it much easier to restock with experienced blood, you still need to be able to develop talent to win. Otherwise, success, which is already difficult to sustain, is near impossible in my opinion. If Sanders can't develop talent, and can only import it through transfers, he probably won't be successful long term. If Sanders does well at developing talent, he'll likely be coaching in the SEC or B1G in the next few years.
That’s exactly my point. A five win increase is huge. You are discounting it, because A) you don’t respect the impact of Deion’s coaching and B) you are using the previous starting point as a way to discount the mathematical equivalence. 6-1=5 and 11-6=5, no matter what your biases against Deion are.
You DO realize that many coaches followed a 1-11/2-10 season with 5-6 win seasons...right? Sanders improved the state of the team, but is it due to his coaching or is it due to buying a boatload of players? Granted, part of being a successful head coach is to attract talented athletes to your program, but star power and glitz will only last so long. Personally, I believe if he finishes 5-7 this year and 6-6 the next, he will be moving on. Ultimately, I think his goal is to be the head coach of Florida State, or even Alabama. But I am intrigued. What perceived biases towards Sanders do I have?
I don’t know what your biases against him are, but for some reason it seems you don’t want to give him credit. Maybe it’s the FSU association… maybe you don’t like his flashiness. I don’t know why you are intrigued about it. Surely, you know what your own feelings are.
