I am a big anti BN fan. I am fine with trying to go for it and the actual play call. Just didn't work out. If our o line is better you play more straight up, otherwise you need to be creative and lucky.
You must not have been around during the Dickey years. Florida was up by 13 points when he pulled the 4th and dumb.
The issue wasn't the trick play; it was running several trick plays during the game and ALL of them blowing up in your face. And you never run something like that on your side of the 50 unless it's the end of the game, not in the 1st quarter when you are down just 3 points. Trick plays are extremely useful when the other team doesn't expect them and you know what you are doing. We ran them like we just drew them up on the sidelines in the sand. I think Utah or Utah St or Boise St were the masters of the trick play, executed to perfection. That's because they practiced almost as much as a dive play. You know it was a dumb idea when one such trick play was the Play of the Game, not an 80 yard Georgia TD but a laugher of a play we ran.
Sucks to have to wait another year for another shot at "Them People". Just have to bear it. Need to take care of arky, get to 6 - 3 and see if UF can pick up another win if not 2, keep adding to the class and keep building the culture.
If the play had worked it probably wouldn’t even be discussed today: But it didn’t. That said, I didn’t like the call. Seems to me that any play that took even a small amount of time to develop was doomed to TFL. Quick hitter or QB sneak would have been my uneducated, non analytical choice.
Some say that the trick play didn’t work because UGA expected it. I’d say UF definitely showed QB sneak when Mertz moved under center so one would conclude that they were expecting sneak. The UGA defense also adjusted to that. So the obvious conclusions are UGA is just that good or they knew our signals. Or both.
And if you dogmatically adhere to analytics and the other team analyzes the same data they will know what you are going to call every time.
I’ll believe that we will have an OC next year when I see it. And if we see one you can bet your ass that he will be a clone or as close to one as coach can find.
Sometimes I wonder if people were watching the same game. Our only shot was to keep pace on the scoreboard, we were all calling for it. It screams of a coach who knows he needs to score points with a team that is a 2 TD dog. As MANY posters have said, if we can't get 2' we aren't going to win or deserve to win. I would rather go down swinging 100 times out of 100. The play that was called is an entirely different discussion.
Bottom line he should have punted. Early in the game? Defense might have gotten a stop who knows? I don’t think it ended the game or anything but Florida could have kept it close longer. He coached that whole game desperate and frustrated. I don’t blame him for feeling that way given how his players were getting whipped on the actual field on the ol. Hell if the ol was just a tad better Mertz has another career day. I’m sure he felt he was close to making it a game. But he coached himself right out of it. Even so - Georgia was just so much better on the field I don’t see why anyone is mad at him.
He can’t very well say we need some more players. “We have some talent but we are short a few.” He coaches what he has and make the best of it. We are an average sec team and will have to fight other average teams to be 500. They have coaches and players tgat don’t want to lose either.
Exactly. If you can’t get iches, you can’t win. Tricks aren’t needed for inches. We had no chance either if we chose to punt for field position.. we needed to s ore to beat Georgia, not give them the ball.
