fwiw, in case you’re interested in watching. A couple of things of note: They were well aware of Wilson and his playmaking abilities. Kirby talked about how Billy is aggressive in terms of analytics and believes in it.
I feel Dickey’s call was worse. Billy knew they had to keep the ball away from Ga as much as possible and out scoring them was almost insurmountable, so he had to try something. I thought we had the first down distance on 3rd down but the refs over analyzed it per usual.
4th and one half a yard from our 34 yard-line was NOT ABOUT EXECUTION... That's no taking responsibility for that awful call. If he tries to run it up the middle and we fail, so be it... but a trick play? Trick plays work best when it's least expected, and is practiced until we can't get it wrong. I also think trick plays work best from a spread formation. Not bunched together.
Or maybe he'll take full responsibility for the play calls. Having said that, some of the bad was definitely on the players. But he needs to say, "hey next time we won't make that same mistake again." But don't blame the players for bad execution on a silly trick play that he should NOT have called. Man... if we can't get one yard then punt the ball... Don't make our football team look dumb and incompetent because of your bad calls.
Yep, but I was more frustrated that he didn't just line our team up and run a power play... or something other than a trick play. But he should not be blaming the execution of that "trick" play afterwards in the presser. That was not a good call and he knows it. I just hope his OC next year is NOT a clone of his. He has to know the 10 and 00 zero personnel and other formations. This does not mean I do NOT like the 11 and 12 personnel formations, but we will have to explore all the formations to be good and unpredictable on offense.
I'm sure the trick play had something to do with analytics. If analytics call for a trick play, then that's what you call no matter how dumb it is.
“We can do a better job managing fan expectations. Hey I want to win them all just like everyone here, but we just played the number one team in the nation and they looked like the best team in the nation. They have elite players and elite coaches and that’s where we want our program to be. Are we there yet? No, but will continue to work out butts off to execute better, coach better and recruit better to get there.”
We have been terrible on the sneaks. O Line just isn’t explosive. Punting was the answer, like it or not. The ball was short and the spot was bad.
I think the data set on which Billy's analytics were derived must be flawed. My Excel spreadsheet was calling for the Annexation of Puerto Rico from that down and distance at that point in the game.
The analytics say go for it on 4th and 1/2 yard (and should have 6” at most). Problem is analytics Dont speak to talent of UGA versus our o line. That pushes me toward the other 2 options: trick or punt. If the trick works- genius. Fails- fool. Punt - gutless. My issue is that BN does not seem to have a knack for calling the right play at the right time. Some is luck but the good ones get “lucky” a lot.
By contrast, Georgia had the ball inside their own one yard line late. I think it was Danielson who wondered whether it would be too risky to take a new there. Georgia easily pushed the pile two yards.
Yah, why don't we have a short yardage play for big Dez.......? (a.k.a. Big Fridge) I'm sure Dez could move the pile. You could even use Dez as a decoy and get the ball outside to someone BEYOND the first down marker. The thing that upset me most throughout the game was that the D did not get to Beck........ And attitude,..... When are we going to see the D want to hit people like they want to light them up? C'mon boys, y'all played this game for years and I know you guys can hit and lay the wood..... Just would like to see more of that. Kudos to the RB's yesterday when finishing their runs while still driving INTO the defender, delivering the blow. That was good to see. GO GATORS!!!!
