I'm in the first season of this series. Bit of a slow burn at times but also pretty cool so far. Language is primarily in Spanish so FYI if that bothers you. Paul Giamatti is in the cast but haven't seen him yet and not sure how he's going to tie in! 30 Coins (TV Series 2020– ) ⭐ 7.1 | Drama, Fantasy, Horror
I thought they were fine not terrible, I just dont think I like whatever the director is trying to do, so they didnt really land. But I've been less entertained. And I will always stan for my scream queen Maika Monroe.
Speaking of Maika, Watcher was a slow burn psychhorror/serial killer film I really dug. Anyone who liked Dont Look Now would probably be into this one.
I’ve been on a tear lately. Don’t judge me too much. Recently viewed: House of the devil. Meh. Not terrible but not amazing. Trick R Treat. I liked it. The lodge. Awful. Bleak. Do not recommend. You’re Next. It was ok. Don’t Breathe. I didn’t hate it. Kill List. Interesting. Recommend. I am the pretty thing that lives in the house. Meh. Eerie but Not recommended. Midsommar. Didn’t do it for me. I really enjoyed the original wicker man so…this one was weak in comparison. The Northman. Not horror…It’s like Hamlet. It was alright. The Blackcoats Daughter. It’s okay. Didn’t blow me away. Halloween III. Cheesy as hell. Tourist Trap. Early 80s cheesy but decent little horror flick. Suspiria 1977. So stupid. As we all know it’s hard to find horror movies with a decent plot. I go through a lot of crap to find a few good ones.
Gonna drop a few suggestions of recent viewing from this year: Caine Mutiny Court Martial (Friedkin's last film, on Paramount+, just a well done court drama) Star 80 (Tough watch because you know what happens if you are familiar with the story, but really good - Bob Fosse directed! - the jazz hands guy? what lol?) The Captain (German, another tough watch about human depravity in war, apparently a true story) Cure (Japanese, one of the most unsettling movies I've seen, I loved it) Demonlover (really cool thriller about corporate espionage)
Here's another one. Not a cinematic masterpiece by any means, but if you like fast-paced movies where a group of bad guys picks the wrong guy (also a bad guy) to mess with, it's pretty entertaining. No One Lives (2012) ⭐ 6.0 | Horror, Thriller
2011. It's a little weird and dark by the way, lol. But I liked it. Kill List (2011) ⭐ 6.4 | Action, Crime, Horror
So don't watch the 2020 one, which appears to be some Asian movie that doesn't even have a wikipedia page
I'm hopeful that Five Nights at Freddy's is good but i'm anticipating it will suck. But will still try watching it just in case i'm wrong.
Duck you’re watching some really interesting, off the beaten-path stuff. How’d you come to find an interest in less commercial films?
Ha, I have diverse and eclectic tastes in everything, but credit should maybe go to Netflix and Prime algorithms I suppose. I just scroll through the suggestions, read reviews, and watch trailers for half a hour before I decide what to watch, lol. Or I get a recommendation from a friend. I enjoy foreign language films, for example, because things just feel different, and I get to learn a couple words. I love cheesy 1980s martial arts and action movies. Mafia and horror movies. Dramas. Crimes. You name it. Everything from The Last Dragon to The Hunt For Red October. I am typically more interested in the characters and dialogue than the plot itself. It’s all great.
Thanks for mentioning Kanopy. I found a movie I’ve been searching years to find, since I first rented the VHS tape in 1988.
Just last night I told my wife, after watching a very average Palestinian movie, that I can find mediocre movies interesting if I’m interested in the setting, or the scenery, or the basic storyline. Last night’s movie did show West Bank scenery and gave some insights into Palestinian life in Israel, even if the acting was only average and the plot had a lot of holes in it.
