What is the alternative at this point in time? Seal off Gaza and allow hamas to remain?

Ok let’s say hamas surrenders tomorrow, they all turn themselves in. What happens next? Palestinians just accept apartheid rule and permanent occupation? (Or whatever you want to label the status quo) Is Israel going to integrate them? Until that problem is solved nothing changes. Israel thought they could keep the status quo with their defense systems funded by our tax dollars and walls but that didn’t hold. Instead of giving them a blank check to pursue their idea of a final solution and poisoning our relationships with every Arab country and much of the world we could pressure them into brokering a humane solution that lets the Palestinians determine their future as well.

Although it was nowhere near the magnitude of the atrocities of October 7 Hamas has been firing rockets into civilian communities in Israel at least since 2007. Fortunately thanks to the Iron Dome system the rockets have done relatively little damage it was not for lacking of trying.

Tyler Rogoway with an excellent summary of many relevant military developments today I have not seen reported elsewhere. Too much to summarize.

I am waiting to see whether Israeli armor is vulnerable. I have been very concerned about that. Also holding my breath about Hezbollah

He has some other informative tweets about Israeli “sponge bombs” to seal tunnels and cyber capabilities blocking all or most OSINT. Frustrating but understandable

No. It came out of the Hamas Charter. Which calls for the killing of Jews everywhere. And for no peace with Israel and the destruction of the State of Israel. And based on your posting In this thread, including your refusal to even acknowledge the charter which was previously shown to you, it is evident who your are and what you believe. Posters linked the charter and you simply ignore it and go back to the same mantra. And we know you can read. So, your posting bespeaks and a core belief system— not any fact based understanding.

Without getting into who started it, Israel and Hamas have been in continuous conflict since Hamas took power, with I think 4 sustained multi day conflicts incursions. October 7 was an atrocity and an escalation, and Israel was caught by surprise, thinking Hamas no longer would attack like that. But the conflict has been pretty consistent.

One other note I should have remembered immediately. And this is just to give balance, not to blame Israel solely. Israel has blockaded Gaza since Hamas took power. A blockade is an act of war under international law. This law has played a significant part in Israeli history because it is what Israel points to in response to charges that Israel "started" the Six Day war - Egypt's naval blockade (in reality Nasser was putting on a show but did not intend to start hostilities, but Israel likely did not not know that and was under a blockade). This is from a very pro-Israeli source.

In the third video of this mini-series, Israel pursues a diplomatic solution to the tensions with Egypt, but Egypt imposes a naval blockade on Israel. And that’s an act of war. The world waits to see what will happen next.

By late May, Egyptian President Nasser’s deployment of tens of thousands of troops in the buffer zone along Israel’s border was an unambiguous threat to Israel.

Israeli Prime Minister Levi Eshkol responded cautiously that Israel would not initiate hostilities as long as Egypt refrained from closing the international waterway leading to Israel’s southern port – the Straits of Tiran. Such an act would cut off Israel’s supply of oil and other vital resources, by blocking Israeli access to the Gulf of Aqaba and Asia.

Again, there's a lot of history to know before viewing matters as simple

Nah…when you murder you go to jail, your life is over, and you don’t get to determine your future anymore. Your future is determined for you by those more powerful than you. That is Gaza’s fate now.

Are the French going to sent their military people in to fight that war? Is, then I welcome it... other wise all this does in oddly enough make the U.S. the main player there and that's not what we American should want.

We don't needs the French playing "power broker" with American lives.

Told you it would be just a matter of time before Biden turned on Israel. Asking Israel to hold off on the ground assault is stupid. It was never going to be pretty. Might as well rip the band-aid off and get it over with. Israel needs to eradicate Hamas. They’re only going to do that with a ground invasion. Perhaps it draws Iran into the conflict and Israel can address the root problem directly at that point. Either way, Hamas needs to go. How else, Mr. Biden, is it going to happen if not by ground invasion??

This is the kind of stupidity that you find in anti-Semitic thinking. An opinion prefaced on a Jewish presence in Israel or Israel itself being “colonialism.” And the typical blame of Israel for its response to the war made on it. This is intellectual thought that disguises a call for the destruction of the state of Israel. That is what “Colonialism” is a buzzword for. Perhaps she supports a return to the Ottoman Empire, which preceded the British Mandate? Or the Sultante? Or the Roman Empire? No mention is made of the Jewish presence in Israel for centuries before 1948. Or the British efforts to block Jews from entering Israel. Or the Jews who had to leave Europe and go somewhere after WW2 or the Arab countries who kicked Jews out or forced them to leave. And then, of course, there is the inevitable accusation against Israel for responding to the evil forced by the Hamas terror structure hidden behind human shields. With no mention of the Hamas Charter that calls for the destruction of Israel and killing Jews everywhere. https://www.washingtonpost.com/opin...l-palestinians-race-colonialism-black-people/. Big “Palestinian Solidarity” March today in London. Widespread support for the tactics of Hamas.

Maybe I’m way off base here but I wouldn’t anticipate any troops on the ground in Gaza that aren’t Israeli.

Just so I understand….. So the civilian Gazans are held hostage by Hamas. Hamas are pure animals and the people of Gaza know it so they don’t resist otherwise they will be killed. So as a result, the Israelis and IDF are supposed to sacrifice their own lives to save Gazans were too afraid to die to face Hamas themselves ?. Not sure I understand that logic. And that says nothing of the people around the world seemingly ‘exhilarated’ about Hamas attack.

Israel’s goal is to destroy Hamas. Not to save Gazans who are under Hamas rule.

As it should be. Every logical person knows Hamas hides arms and their fighting force under schools and hospitals. The media gives them free propaganda. I say the Israelis should wipe out whatever they need to for a little future moral hazard not to just militants but to people and citizens to learn if they allow this fester it will all be destroyed. It’s all waterfront and money would flood into the area for commercial development in the absence of militants.

Hamas represents the people of Gaza. They were elected by the people of Gaza, and they were very up front about their core ideology and beliefs in their charter.
