I was ready to move on but supported Coach White as long as he was here. That said, I'm very happy with Coach Golden and wish Coach White success . . . at his next opportunity after the mangy, LegHumpers. LOL! Yeah, I read that too. Must be a mis-type and meant his older brother, right?
White never had an issue recruiting here (though technically what, just 2 or 3 5* depending on the service you looked at?). His first full class was all whifs and busts. But we were generally pretty well loaded with 4* players on paper, even if many were “plan b”. The issue was the offense just never worked, very slow and very little ball movement. For awhile Nembhard took the blame just because the Hill/Cheese combo had some success under White, figured maybe Nembhard just didn’t like to get out in transition. But by the end of his tenure, it could only be pinned on the coaches offensive scheme (or lack thereof). I know it’s cliche, but great coaches produce something greater than the sum of the parts. With White, the last several years seemed less than and it just always seemed to be sloppy offense. Hopefully Golden gets some momentum this year. He’s done a great job building the roster. Could even get some serious recruiting momentum going. Once again it feels like we should have a solid tourney team. But with the last few years of White (and bad luck with Castleton injury last year) you can’t feel great until there is some serious space between us and the “bubble”.
I haven’t looked this up, but if I recall correctly, the following guys who played for MW at UF all were given at least one 5-star rating by the rating services: Brandone Francis, Devon Robinson, Kasey Hill, Andrew Nembhard, Scottie Lewis, Tre Mann and Kowacie Reeves. MW didn’t get much out of these guys.
Oh great, former CMW is tearing it up now on the recruiting trail for the poodles. Dominique Wilkins' kid Jacob (#57) and 5* Asa Newell as back-to-back commits. Wilkins, son of NBA great Dominique, picks UGA
He recruited well for us when he was here. I don’t think there is any question that he can recruit. The question is his coaching. He is still quite young. Perhaps he is still learning to be a better coach. Time will tell.
He landed 5 stars here too. Wishful thinking to assume he wouldn’t continue to go after the same talent. Recruiting was never his biggest issue.
