I call bullshit on the 48 hours part of his story. I'm guessing it was a few hours before.

Shrooms are pretty unpredictable I hear, and that time frame makes sense when including the part where he said he'd been awake for 40 hours or something. Some psychedelics don't hit for hours, and the high makes it hard to sleep.

    I call bs on "I hear" :D

I'll cop to shrooming a number of back in college in the 1990s. They were fun unpredictable, though I don't recall ever having been kept awake for 40 hours from them.

Trust me, nobody is still tripping from mushrooms 48 hours after ingesting them.

No, you are definitely not at a peak high at that point, I'm not sure its out of your system though either. But combined with no sleep, you are definitely not in your right mind.

Yeah, I remember going to work as a life guard after doing psychedelics and not sleeping for like a day. Fortunately, it was a slow day and no one needed saving. :) I've never been awake for 40 hours in any circumstances though. I dont know if this guy kept dosing or maybe was doing other drugs he's not copping to, but the stuff that keeps your brain active and stimulated isn't conducive to sleep.

It's not the combo at that point. Its just the sleep deprivation. Unless it triggered some sort of latent psychotic personality disorder.

It sounds like he was taking the mushrooms to treat depression. I'm guessing the depression had more to do with this than the mushrooms did.

Was he diagnosed/treated or is this just what he said? Because how are you still a pilot if you have some kind of formal/clinically determined depression?

I was just speculating based on this article.

Off-duty pilot accused of trying to shut off airliner's engines mid-flight said he took 'magic mushrooms' 48 hours before the incident, court documents say | CNN

"Emerson had experienced depression and the recent death of a friend, the documents say. He said he was having a nervous breakdown and told the flight crew he needed to be subdued, according to a separate federal criminal complaint."

It goes on to say that it was his first time taking mushrooms and given that they are the hot new thing to treat depression...

Who knows with this guy. Seems he was suffering from depression among other things and sleep deprivation, whatever the reason, can cause some weird behaviors.

Shrooms never lasted more than six hours for me which was plenty long enough.

One of my brother’s squadron mates had clinical depression and still flew. It took a number of them to say they’d never fly with him again for much to be done. That guy ended up committing suicide a couple months ago.

Thought I’d share my brother’s take on the situation to make everyone feel warm and fuzzy about flying:

“He was probably trying to self medicate on shrooms and was never diagnosed with depression because he never sought help for it. Pilots by nature are afraid to seek help for mental health issues because there’s a good chance you’ll lose your medical certificate for a while or possibly forever plus you’d have to disclose it to future employers.”
