GOP House attempts to elect a Speaker (former Jim Jordan thread)

Anti-Emmer forces already lining up to nuke him if necessary.

 

Donalds and Hern out. Just Johnson and Emmer now. Emmer doesn't need to gain much to win this vote, but, as I said, a group of opponents are already lining up to make sure he doesn't get the votes he needs on the floor. Some Democrats discussing the notion of voting present for Emmer, as he beats some of the alternatives, but not sure how many would be needed, especially as it will likely harden his opposition if such a thing happened.

 

Although it's just a guess it's not beyond the realm of possibility that enough Democrats end up voting for him to put him over the top. It's also possible that some Republicans could end up voting "present" rather for another candidate as Matt Gaetz did when McCarthy was elected effectively lowering the threshold to elect him.

 

Emmer's opposition makes this almost impossible without a coalition with Democrats. Some Democrats have signaled a willingness to work with him. I don't think he has reached out yet. Yet to be seen though how his own supporters would react to such a plan as well.

 

I hope the Dems don't unless they ask for specific concessions to vote on certain bills. This mess is for the GOP to figure out

Emmer is a harsh conservative. ie doesn’t believe science on climate change. No real reason, just because. Also posted a video of himself shooting an auto machine gun with caption “fire pelosi” (feeding into hate of extreme fringe right/maga, and their admiration for killing people they disagree with). Just to name a few.

But, he showed an inclination to not totally live in maga’s Qanon fantasy world. See below. The Crazy Caucus won’t vote for him.

I'm not sure anyone has a path to 217, I mean, this guy got the most votes of who's left in their private meetings, right? So a guy with less votes in private will somehow get to 217?

The democrats deal should be that the minority leader also has the power to call for votes on bill ...

 

Maybe a snowball's chance in hell once the shit starts hitting the fan (after a government shutdown and more inability to even function). Money talks, so when the big fish start barking they'll get off their asses and find a remedy.

This guy's nomination lasted 4 hours, didnt even get an official vote ...
