Would love for the HBC to give a pregame speech to the team, explaining what this game is all about. He could really motivate our guys to play with intensity.

You might want to re-look that history.

From the time he began at Florida in 1979, Pell went:

    1979: 0-10-1
    1980: 8-4-0
    1981: 7-5-0
    1982: 8-4-0
    1983: 9-2-1 (6th in the AP)

IIRC, the improvement from 1979 to 1980 was the largest single season improvement in CFB history to that point. In 1981, he had a transition year, as his earlier stars left (just as SOS had in 1992), but he rebounded in 1982 to go 8-4 again, then went 9-2-1 in 1983.

I'm not one to say "Fire Billy" like some others, but it didn't take Charley Pell five years to build his team.

You're looking at this the wrong way.

If you suggest an approach and a leghumper objects, it's like a validation of your idea.

In today's day and age, if we replicated Pell's win/loss record for the CBN's first 5 years, we wouldn't even make the playoffs. Everything is different today, and IMO what any previous coach accomplished is irrelevant for our way forward. With NIL and the portal, it's still shaking out which team and which coach will be successful long term in the future.
CBN is doing fine for now. We are in the rebuilding stage, which is progress on the field and upping our recruiting. Better days are ahead.

    Wouldn't that be awesome!
There is no one that understands why we need to beat Georgia more.

So is making the Playoffs the minimum standard for building a team? Wow, aren't WE demanding! At this point, being able to do what Pell did is a substantial improvement. From 1982-1985, Pell's program went 8-4, 9-2-1, 9-1-1 and 9-1-1, a combined record of 35-8-3 (.793). That program was Spurrier and Meyer-like, and was littered with NFL stars on both sides of the ball. That program would have made the playoffs had it been built today, particularly with NIL.

That much is certain, and I really have no idea how that would work. It would be a combination of prudent recruiting, portal evaluation, financial evaluation, and a coaching climate that keeps top players from fleeing into the Portal.

I hope you're right. I'm rooting for Billy hard, but remember: the other teams also want to compete, and a few have more money to invest than we seem to have.

It is gratifying to hear you tout records of 7-5 and 8-4 as great stuff, with no championships. I'm sure you will treat Napier the same when he matches those records.

Really sad how Mullen jacked up a tremendous opportunity to do something great at UF. What a lazy "rich" schmuck.

Seriously? How long has you been a Gator by chance? Are you THAT spoiled? Is competing for MNCs our Divine Right? Pell built the foundation of modern Florida football, and he had much less to work with than SOS, Meyer and even Napier. For you, is the minimum standard conference and national titles? If you recall...

1980: Georgia won the SEC and MNC that year, and beat the Gators due to an extremely luck break that still gets played EVERY year during the WLOCP.
1981: Pell had a transition team, similar to SOS in 1992 and Meyer in 2007.
1982: Georgia again competed for the MNC while running the table in the SEC.
1983: Pell's first great team, a top 6 team. Unfortunately, Auburn and Georgia finished 3d and 4th.

So can I count you in as among those pushing the wagons of tar and feathers if Billy doesn't win the SEC in the next couple of years?
