It's literally an international medical organization of mixed nationality doctors, who are not beholden to Hamas, who work with hospitals in Gaza, likely have easy access to stats on the dead and wounded, who are releasing the preliminary body count ... I'm not sure what more you need or what would qualify as "verified source" in your world. I have no reason to believe they are lying, and the fact that every news source from Al Jazeer to OAN, and everything in-between, is running with the "hundreds of dead" statement without qualification tells me they trust the source, and probably have confirmed with other sources.

Can someone explain what it means when they say Gaza is an open air prison( prior to oct 7)? It’s my understanding this has been autonomous since 2005. That’s almost 20 years. Who specifically is preventing the citizens of Gaza from doing anything and what specifically are they preventing them from doing ? Are they free to leave ? Are they free to trade with other countries? They have water access, have they made any progress on deeper water port access?

No, they aren’t free to leave. There are only two non-smuggling routes in or out. One into Egypt and one into Israel. They are heavily restricted. They need permission from both Hamas and the other country to leave or re-enter.

There has been a rolling blockade for all that time administered by Israel and Egypt. They control all legitimate coming and going of people and goods. Including by water and air.

So it’s a virtual prison. Which also insidiously works for Hamas, since most of the population is under 20 and 65% of them are unemployed, and “virtual” prisoners. A pretty good recipe to create new terrorists that might join up and be willing (paid) to do things like attack a nuclear power with Toyotas and gliders.

I imagine that if the average citizen could just leave, that’s precisely what they’d do.
