So in the Orlando Sentinel this morning is a column about how maybe Taylor Swift can get KC to get rid of their offensive chant. From the post: Worse, while repeating the violent gesture — with many non-natives wearing headdresses and warpaint in team colors — the crowd hummed or chanted “Massacre,” a song popularized by the Florida State University Seminoles marching band, later adapted by the University of Illinois Fighting Illini band, but which was originally appropriated from a 1950’s theme song for a cartoon called “Pow-wow the Indian Boy.” So are the Seminole Indians the only Native Americans ok with this?? Orlando Sentinel Native American group hopes Taylor Swift's influence could end tomahawk chop during Chiefs games
So true..so annoying..their band should be seated out by the interstate...way worse than Rocky Top or tha Sandstorm/ rooster crowing
Just from that one bit - that made Bill Burr my favorite commedian after George Carlin passed away. And everything he says about that stupid tomohawk chop is so true - some idiot on the set in old hollywood - 'what do they sound like?..... Baaaaaah-Ahhhhh-Ayyyyy-Ahhhhh' The Braves in the past year or so caved in to criticism as well - they don't play the drum beat and song anymore for the Tomohawk Chop at games - the fans just kind of pick up on their own now and start it themselves
My take is simple: if it’s okay for SWAC to look ridiculous, then it’s okay for any team. Until the day the NCAA is willing to enforce the rules universally and not make exceptions for teams that buy tribal endorsement, then the rules are meaningless. And by the way, the actual Seminole tribe does have a problem with SWAC practices. SWAC gets around it with a tribal endorsement from a bunch of pretendians calling themselves the “Seminole Tribe of Florida.” I’ve met a few of their members in my day. Whiter than I am, they are.
As a Gator who is also a chiefs fan, I cringe every time they do that God awful ripped off chant. I'm not as passionate a pro sports fan so there are even times I'm ok with the crowd getting shut up by the other team. Hate for fsu trumps like for pro sports....
Do you remember when the Braves had a teepee behind the outfield fence and after every homer a guy in an indian suit would come out and dance around? Even that isn't sillier than fsu's white guy in indian makeup riding around on a horse, especially since, historically, Seminoles didn't ride horses.
Same group that owns the HardRock. It's just a business entity that exploits it to get around gaming laws in Florida.
That was before I settled here in the Atlanta area - back in the Fulton County stadium days. I only have attended Braves games from Turner Field and onwards. But I do remember a radio personality in Atlanta - Southside Steve Rickman - he used to talk about that teepee at the stadium - and as a kid he got to have a birthday party in the teepee with an appearance from that guy in his Brave's costume.
Or dress like Plains Indians. According to the artwork of the period, actual Seminoles dressed closer to what we imagine when we think of pirates. And — fancy this — they weren’t armed with flaming spears either. They had muskets not that different than what Jackson’s troops had. The whole SWAC farce is beyond stupid.
