That absolutely happened, and isn’t at all abnormal. Any school with a competent AD is constantly reaching out via intermediaries to gauge theoretical interest. Not only for potential firings, but plan A/B/C if your head coach bails for their dream job, the NFL, retires unexpectedly, etc etc.

The universities have boosters and trusted agents to do this, and the coaches have agents to relay the message. This is how they can say “we have had no contact with Coach X” or “I have never talked to School Y” or “we never offered anyone but Coach Plan C” with a straight face. Because it’s true- they didn’t talk, their agents did.

I have no ill will towards Meyer but I understand why there has been some distance from him. Still, I think he will get his day of praise at UF some day.

Don't know about other QB clubs but it seems the UT version is a big lunch the Monday after a game for "Bull Gator" types, they get a little "inside the locker room" update from a guy on the staff, honor a past player, they recognize 2 HS Players of the Week and a HS Ref of the week.

For anyone that cares ( and wants to be mad at him or like him anyway)

Meyer was a great speaker. All Vols were respectful and appreciative. He told some great stories from all the schools he's coached at, with prompting from the MCs. Great story about he and Shelly and how glad they were to come to Gainesville...until their first exposure to Florida heat/humidity. He thought he was a tough guy but found out he wasn't.

5 attributes he looks for in recruiting (in precedent order):
    1. Competitive Spirit: Wants to see tape of how they are on 4th down, in a championship, when they are down late in the 4Q, not running for 300 yards against inferior teams.
    2. Toughness: Mental & Physical
    3. Leadership: Stating with leading themselves (work habits, alcohol, etc)
    4. Intelligence: The complexity of the game
    5. Adaptability: Ability to react to change

    • Spread offenses often deny a QB the opportunity to be a leader, look people in the eye, check into another play. "Everything comes from the sidelines." Said he was part of it being that way, nit sure it's good for the game.
    • Greatest athlete he ever saw at any level: Percy Harvin: "A violent runner who rarely was hit violently because of his speed, ability to evade." Highlighted the jet sweep against UT in The Swamp in 2007. A few groans from the crowd. Urban smiled and said "You remember."
    • Greatest CFB Player: Tim Tebow, hands down. No question in his mind. All 5 of the attributes above. Talked about the 4th down in 2006 when Tebow made up for Leak's slide. Recalled the Eric Berry hit, much to delight of locals.
    • He's lucky to have what he has in life after the wacked out priorities he lived by for so long. Said "Never took a day off." No interest in returning to that.
He told a great story about the 2014 3d string OSU QB that took over in the game against "the school up north". He reminded the Vols that they are really only one of many "rivals" for UF, behind UGA and the "School Out West". Note this is a Vol gathering; no one would notice if he said "FSU". Nope. He remembers his rivals.

He seemed glad when my son and I approached him at the end with "Go Gators". Told him we'd been at all his wins here in Knoxville, plus the '06 SECCG. He gladly autographed my 2006, 2008 and 2009 UF Media guides. Good handshake...seemed genuinely glad.

They have had a number of Gators over the years, and notable rivals but it's mostly former Vols as the speakers. Apparently, Chris Doering is a favorite they've had a couple of times.

He is obviously suffering from winners remorse.

He beats down Ohio State for the title so he goes to coach there.

He beat Tennessee 6 times out of 6, so he feels the need to make amends.

and perpetual 30 plus point name the score beat downs his Gators laid on Georgia, FSU, LSU and pretty much everyone else. Now we have to "hope for the best" against those teams. Give Urban his due...we were a juggernaut under him and it was fantastic. We do need an offensive coordinator for next years team...lol.

The point being made is that Urban did not leave to take the OSU job. He could not have known that a very beloved coach would get caught up in scandal and be sent packing.

Urban couldnt refuse the OSU job when it opened, but he had no eyes on it when he left here. How could he?

Thats all some of us are saying when we defend Urban on this.

Had the OSU job been open when he left here, or had it been a hot seat in Columbus type of thing, then I get it.

But JT was solid for years yo come. Urban lucked out and couldn't say no.

Right, but when Urban stepped down here, Tressel's job was in no jeopardy and was assumed safe for years to come. Urban didnt leave here for that job.

You think there aren't back channels going on about urban given tressels multitude of transgressions popping up? He was scrutinized at Youngstown state. They tolerated his ethics either through tacit approval or "willful ignorance" while he was successful but with the potential for Urban looming as a viable option don't you think it's possible if not likely that there were other things in play?

I don't like unconfirmed conspiracies or stating claims as fact without evidence however it's absolutely plausible something like this could happen. Sports are filthy and I highly doubt communication with urban started only after his relationship with us ended. He had an office in our stadium still

That goes on all the time, all over the country. Athletic directors need to have a "list" in case they need to make a hire in a hurry. Doesn't mean squat about whether Urban left us for OSU.

I’m not sure why you put months in all caps. I suppose it’s for some kind of emphasis, but I’m not sure that emphasis supports your position.

I was laid off once when the small company I worked for closed down. I was off work for 10 months before I found another job. Rest assured, I did not consider that next job coming immediately after I was laid off.

His antics never injured me. But I can see why some Gator fans dislike the man. I have long ago forgiven him for that.

I dont care that he left us for another job. I care that he left the program broken. Of course Mullen bailed him out by leaving the program “more broken”. At least urban left some pretty good talent.

Question; Is UT catering the event from Meyers place in Columbus? I hear they have some really good Grinders there.
