Man, to those in the post-game thread comparing Mertz to Chad Pennington and his “limp noodle” arm, I offer the winning TD pass as conclusive and definitive rebuttal. An absolute bullet and strike - as he’s about to be illegally demolished, I may add. If that’s evidence of a limp noodle arm, well - bring on the overcooked pasta! I’ll have seconds.
I’ve said before that I am not a multitasker personally. I can do one thing at a time and focus on one thing at a time. Napier may be a bit like me that he could do any of the one jobs, but doing everything at the same time may be a little much. Perhaps it’s just the talent that’s on the field though and he just needs more players.
Yeah, I think a lot of the folks making these kind of comments have never actually thrown a football before. Mertz has the arm strength necessary to throw it as deep as we need. Just watch him throw everywhere else on the field and he has plenty of zip on his passes. Throwing the deep ball requires touch, and clearly he hasn't been very accurate, but that has absolutely nothing to do with his arm strength. Some of these fans acting like he's throwing it as far as he can
With a recast OL Mertz has been a huge upgrade over last season, proving how you look in gym shorts has nothing to do with QB play. On top of that our team wasn't so out coached that thy didn't blow a 29 point lead deep in quarter three so we can cap nonsense talk around that preceived issue. Pretty good game for the Gators.Enjoy them as they come 'cause there's no guarantee tomorrow.
I'll say this. I would have loved for AR to have stayed another year and see what kind of development he could have had. He's performed better than expected in the NFL when healthy although some of his same deficiencies still show. One can share that opinion AND love the moxie and poise Mertz has brought this year without disparaging the other.
I believe AR would have made a big leap here if he had stayed. Because of his overall limited games at qb (HS and college), he was more like a FR than a third year SO last year. Obviously, he's shown that growth by starting in the NFL. That's no small feat. Ironically, AR and GM are nearly polar opposites. AR generally had a great feel for the long ball, but sort of had the "yips" when it came to the short easier throws. I don't think Mertz strength is the longer throws, but he's improving. I'm just happy to see the "scheme" police can be quieted, at least for another week.
Seeing as I’m the only one who said “limp noodle”. You definitely did. Chad Pennington had a limp noodle for an arm. Never said Mertz did and even explained why I don’t think Mertz has a limp noodle. Go back and read for yourself. Enjoy your day

But, I find bickering on this site tiresome, and don’t plan on continuing it on this point. I see (and saw) you qualifying your position in that odd sequence of posts 3 and 4, so I’ll just accept that while you don’t disagree that Mertz is Pennington 2.0, and while you feel that Pennington had a noodle arm, you don’t feel that Mertz has a noodle arm.
