I don’t know that this is terribly relevant to the Disney issue because both what they are and how they were created (including by whom) are vastly different.

Reedy Creek was created by direct act of the Florida Legislature and was vested with broad and unique powers. It was effectively one of a kind.

This one is a community development district under Chapter 190 created by ordinance of the Orange County government. There are hundreds and hundreds of CDDs in Florida.

nonsense. Orange COunty couldn't afford to upgrade their WW plant and the WW plant was degrading the value of Universal so Universal agreed to tax themselves to improve the plant with the condition that they be in control of it since they didn't trust Orange county to properly implement the corrections. it has absolutely nothing to do with any political bent but keep telling yourself that. these taxing districts don't save any company money, it just provides them control over how efficiently that money is spent and the quality of work and employee that the money is spent on.

Three things at work, likely more:

Disney publicly criticized DeSantis and the bill, and they are trying to make businesses fear them, part of the whole woke corporations shtick. They need to make an example that they are in control, not neutral laws and that changing societal norms can be forcibly repressed if a leader does not feel constrained by law or morality. Disney being the biggest employer in the state was a feature, not a bug. Better example

Disney has been a bete noir to social conservatives since at least the 90s. DeSantis allies wants to control content. No more black mermaids. Everyone needs to know their place and get back in it.

As far as inconsistency between treatment of Disney and Universal, that’s a performance of power, feature, not a bug. What better than to demonstrate that they are not constrained by law or logic when exercising power?

I mean, this is accidentally pretty progressive. Universal is 1000% more woke than Disney. All that Harry Potter stuff with MegaGay characters running the world on deviljuice. Puppets teaching kids to be communists. There is a show to teach boys to put on make-up and it also promotes Satan Day. That's just a portion of the actual park stuff, never mind the movie end. Blatantly gay stuff like Mama Mia as well as the more subtle homobro stuff like the Fast&Furious franchise, for the insecure/still closeted population. Fifty Shades of Grey, for the people too suppressed to get actual porn. They are so into that segment they made that steaming pile of filth into a franchise too.

Good for Universal. Swooped right in and owned both sides.

Legit grade -- Bold takeover, insanely quick: A+

The Holy Land Experience failed despite being considered a church for tax purposes. Florida is where woke goes to profit!

Disney absolutely screwed themselves. Not understanding that makes me understand why you are a liberal lawyer. Reedy Creek was a benefit voluntarily bestowed on Disney from the state. It would not be available to you or I if we were in business. It could be voided at any time. Disney has been woke with a huge proportion of lgbt eimployees for years. They had Gay Days going back to at least the mid 90’s. Then they got too big for their britches and entered the world of political activism. Not only was what Disney did foolish, it was totally unnecessary as Disney lost a large amount of the goodwill of the citizens of the state by their political leanings and business practices. The state was within their right to revoke special privileges once Disney got too slanted.

If the state had pursued criminal charges against them I would be in your camp. But they didn’t do that. They just revoked Disney’s special taxing agreement and made them live and operate like all the other businesses in Florida operate unless they are granted special taxing district status.

Anyway, back to my point, Disney was foolish to poke the sleeping bear. That choice on their part will most likely cost them 100’s of millions of $ over the next 10-15 years.

I know several Universal execs very well. They know that they are in the entertainment business and that many of their employees will lean left. They also know that they can’t make money pissing off 1/2 of their customer base and telling the state government what to do.

so, now the fake cons are straight up radical commies. Real cons want private companies to speak their minds, to have taxation WITH representation. Let the people NOT THE radical commie thin skinned clowns decide. It is absolutely shocking reading this thread knowing that these pimps for radical communism actually think they are cons.

There's no rhyme or reason to any of it. It's just what gets caught up in the right wing talk o sphere for the outrage du jour. Ford had an LGBT Raptor and nobody gave a shit. Budweiser mails a beer with a LGBT person on it and they all melt down.
