Sixty is the age when you really start feeling your age. Your brain tells you that you can still do things, but your body says, "Whoa, hold on, you aren't a kid anymore." At that age and you have a new pain you have to think back to what you may have done in the past that might have been a cause. Because something as simple as jamming your finger will come back to haunt you.

I tore my gluteus medius running the 50 yard dash in high school. Not a great deal that could be done about it by the medical community at the time. When I was in high school medicine was just past the time of bleeding people and casting out demons as cures.

I hear you. Only problem is my brain hasn’t gotten the message. It keeps telling me, “Come on, you’re a kid!”

You don’t need to do any specific stretches. It will heal over the next 6 weeks. You’ll be stiff when it heals and then you’ll need to stretch to get back to where you were before the injury

Did your health care person not recommend or refer you for physical therapy sessions? If it's a strain I understand but a tear is different and you mentioned both. Probably a strain.

You can start stretching around 4 weeks

Mine sometimes tells me the same thing. Usually when I listen, I embarrass myself. Years ago I used to lift weights several times a weak. A while back I thought I could lift something because I did it 30 years ago, and found out I couldn't curl with two hands what I did dumbell curls with one hand as a younger man.

Not a jock, but was a runner (now a jogger) and pulled my hammy a while back. It took a solid 6 weeks of rest after I figured out that I couldn't run on it and a little rest. I'm now 64 and have learned that going to a stretch trainer greatly reduced recovery time with subsequent injuries.

When I went to my primary Doc on the day it happened he wasn't in I saw the nurse practitioner. They took x-rays and sent them to Simon imaging the results came back no fractures. They didn't really say if it was a tear or a strain I think they were looking more for bone and ligament issues.

Thanks to everybody for the responses, if nothing else you have me thinking. After my 2 hospital stays last month for congestive heart failure then for COVID I am on a bunch of new medications prescribed by several doctors. I probably should talk with both my primary and my cardiologist to make sure all these recent changes in medications are compatible.

Did you have and bruising? If not most likely a strain.

I’m an orthopedic surgeon so feel like I can comment on this. X ray would only show a fracture or if the muscle avulsed part of the bone off. It won’t show if you have a tear/strain.

Your PCP should check to see if there are any drug interactions if they started you on new meds

I hear that! I was barely 61 when I last ran a fast 5k (23:05, 1st in my age group), but have seemed to have the proverbial wall since then. I was slow prior to that race and my goal was to break 24 and I didn't realize how to 23 I was until it was too late to break it. Now, minor injuries pop up and recovery time is longer, but I "think" I can still go.

Oh God now I have to tell a story on myself.......Back about 20 years ago my youngest son was playing high school baseball. I got home from work one day and him and one of his team mates were lifting weights in my garage. His team mate Alex was trying to bench press 250 lbs and was straining. I walked in and called him a pussy. He said "I want to see you do it". Being a typical male I couldn't back down. I was in my early 50s at the time. I got on the bench and while I was straining I felt a pop pop. I had torn my rotator cuff. And before anybody asks yes I did it. I wasn't about to lose that challenge.

A strain is a tear it's just not a complete tear or "rupture." Just FYI. Different grades of strains. Grade 3 is a complete tear. Just to give you an idea of what is going on and the healing process involved

I don’t think I’ve ever had a serious hamstring pull that lasted more than a couple of days, but I’d say just take it easy and your body will let you know how quickly you can return to normal activities. Don’t push it!

If your serious hamstring pull only lasted a couple of days, you didn't have a serious hamstring pull. There's a reason that when athletes get them that they aren't nearly as effective for for quite awhile.

I think you misunderstood me. I was saying that I don’t think I’ve had a serious hamstring pull. Maybe I was unclear. My wording was a bit clumsy.

I’ve gone back and forth on this one with different injuries and cold/heat seams to be the biggest debate. I understand what is being said in relation to it slowing down the healing process but there have been times with this rotator cuff and back/neck issues that with intense inflammation that the icing option was the only thing to help with what I like to call the hard reset.

Geno Hayes (RIP) was the linebacker that talked trash before one of their games and then proceeded to get trucked by Tebow. It was one of the bigger storylines before and after the game. It followed Hayes into the NFL when a coach said something to the effect of "oh I know you. You're the guy with 15 tattooed on your chest." Sadly, Hayes died young from liver failure possibly contributed by NSAIDS he would take for pain.
